Pet Preservation in China: what to know
For families in China, the biggest hurdle is often the freezer, not the practitioner. A pet needs to be frozen within hours and kept frozen without a break, sometimes for weeks. Clinic freezers, borrowed chest freezers and dry ice during outages are what the whole process rests on, wherever in China you live.
Preserving a pet in China usually means waiting months. Freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[1], and a practitioner's queue adds more. Families who cope with the wait best tend to have chosen carefully, agreed everything in writing and found a small way to mark the months while their pet is away.

What local cremation habits mean for your request
Roughly 50%[2] of those who die in China are cremated. Whichever way your family leans, preservation doesn't have to replace it. Some families bury the body and keep a cleaned skull; others cremate and keep a single freeze-dried paw. Think about how a preserved piece would fit alongside the ways your family already remembers the people and animals it has lost.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for this region, so the table below shows UK and US price lists for reference only. Freeze-drying a cat or small dog is typically quoted at USD 1,000–2,000[3] in the US, according to one industry report. Local practitioners, where they exist, set their own prices, so ask for a written quote in local currency.
For a sense of scale, cremating a small pet in Tokyo costs from JPY 14,300 communal to JPY 22,000 individual[4], and private cremation of a cat in Singapore starts around SGD 280[5]. Where full preservation is offered, expect a multiple of those figures, and get a written price in local currency before handing your pet over.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried pet under 1 lb | USD 650[6] | United States |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[3] | United States |
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[7] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[8] | United Kingdom |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[1] | United States |

Rules worth knowing in China
Most of the paperwork you'll sign for preservation is a contract, not a permit. Read what it says about the deposit, storage fees if you can't collect on time, and what happens to your pet if the studio closes or the practitioner falls ill. Keep a copy with your pet's photos. For whatever won't be kept, the rules for China below apply.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic wherever you are, and ask whether they can freeze your pet today.
- Ask how long they could hold your pet, and whether a practitioner or courier could collect from them directly.
- If you have to drive home, buy a hard-sided cooler and dry ice, or failing that a generous load of bagged ice, with your pet sealed in two bags beneath a towel.
- Check the ice every few hours on the road, and never leave the cooler in a parked car in the sun.
- Keep the clinic's paperwork showing the date, your pet's weight and what they died of; the practitioner will ask to see it.
- Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and let them advise whether your pet ships from the clinic or from your own freezer.
Remembering your pet while you wait
The months of waiting can be the hardest part. Some owners mark them with a small memorial at home, such as a candle, a photo and their pet's collar, which later moves aside when the preserved pet returns. Others write down memories while they're fresh, which also helps the practitioner get the details right.

Questions people ask
How many communities do you cover in China?
We have local pet preservation pages for 2 communities in China, including Shanghai and Beijing. Each one covers how to freeze and hold your pet there, what the local weather means for the first hours, shipping to a practitioner, and published prices.
What if nobody in China preserves pets?
Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.
Is there a pet taxidermist in China?
There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in China mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.
Are preservation prices in China different from US price lists?
Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.
How long does pet preservation take for families in China?
Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[10], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[1]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.
Can I visit a practitioner's studio from China before sending my pet?
Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.
