Pet Preservation in Beijing: what to know

Rules in Beijing rarely affect a domestic cat or dog, but they can matter for native wild birds, turtles and other protected species. Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to control wildlife trade. If your pet is anything unusual, tell the practitioner the species and where they came from before you ship, and ask which permits apply.

If you're in Beijing and your pet has just died, the only urgent task is freezing. Tell your vet you're considering preservation, ask them to freeze rather than refrigerate and keep your pet out of the day's cremation collection. The method, the practitioner, the pose and the price can all be decided over the next few weeks.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Beijing

In Beijing, cremation accounts for about 50%[2] of human deaths, so both burial and cremation traditions run through local families. If relatives feel strongly one way, a preserved pet can seem out of step. Many families settle on something in between, like a freeze-dried paw kept on a shelf with the rest of the pet buried or cremated as the family prefers.

Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019) publishes the Beijing rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

In hot, humid climates, the cost of preservation doesn't stop at delivery. Any preserved pet, freeze-dried or mounted, needs a sealed case and a dry, air-conditioned room, and silica gel packs need replacing. Count those in when you compare preservation with simpler keepsakes, such as a paw print or a lock of fur.

If you do find a practitioner, ask how many pets of your species they've preserved, what the price includes and how long the wait is. Published US studios quote 6–12 months[3] for most work. Get the deposit, total and return date in writing before your pet leaves your care.

Rules worth knowing in Beijing

One practical rule matters more than any statute: a pet who has had a post-mortem examination (a necropsy) usually can't be preserved whole, because of the incisions involved. If your vet, insurer or breeder asks for one, decide first which matters more to you, the answers or the body. Otherwise, domestic pets face few legal limits, and the notes below for Beijing cover anything you don't keep.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Stop the clock. Heat is what rules preservation out, so move your pet to a cool, hard floor right away.
  2. Call ahead to your vet or an emergency clinic if you don't have freezer space, and ask them to hold your pet frozen rather than refrigerated.
  3. Set aside the collar, tags and a favorite blanket. Don't cut or trim the coat yet; the practitioner can tell you where a keepsake lock can safely come from.
  4. Bag and freeze your pet inside a few hours, sealed in two layers and posed as if simply lying down.
  5. Decide on the method: preserving the whole pet by freeze-drying, conventional taxidermy, or keeping just one part and cremating the remainder.
  6. Agree everything in writing, including what happens if damage is found when your pet thaws.

Remembering your pet while you wait

Tell the people who knew your pet what you've chosen, in your own words. Most people are curious rather than critical. When your preserved pet comes home, give yourself time with them privately before anyone else visits. The first sight can be emotional, and it's easier without an audience.

Questions people ask

Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in Beijing?

Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.

Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Beijing before sending my pet?

Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.

Can I ship my pet from Beijing to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.

How long does pet preservation take for families in Beijing?

Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[3]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Beijing?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Beijing, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Beijing?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
