Pet freeze-drying and taxidermy in Beijing

Beijing, China

Finding a practitioner from Beijing

Traditional remembrance in China has clear moments, such as the seventh day, Qingming and anniversaries, and some families use those same moments for a pet. Others find a personal ritual helps more: lighting a candle, looking at photos together, or writing down favorite memories. Children cope better when they're told honestly and included in something small and simple, like choosing the photo that sits beside the ashes.

In a fast city where work comes first, it can be hard to make time to grieve. Taking an afternoon to say goodbye isn't indulgent. Many people find it helps to talk with friends who also keep pets or to join online pet-loss groups. If the sadness stays heavy for weeks, speaking with a counselor or doctor is a reasonable step.

In a metro like Beijing, the most popular preservers can have long queues, because word of mouth travels fast among pet owners online. A waiting list isn't always a bad sign, but ask how many pets are ahead of yours and when yours will actually go into the freeze-drying chamber. A frozen pet can wait, so a longer queue with better work may be worth it.

Beijing is home to about 21,540,000 people.

Cremation, burial and preservation in China

With cremation at roughly 50%[1] in China, neither burial nor cremation dominates. That balance often means vets here ask families what they'd like rather than assuming. Use the question: say you're considering preservation and want your pet frozen for now. If you later choose burial or cremation instead, a week in a freezer has cost you nothing.

Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019) is where the China figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Beijing tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

How Beijing's climate affects the first hours

We don't have weather averages for Beijing, so here's a rough rule for anywhere: if you'd be comfortable indoors in a T-shirt, your pet should be frozen within a few hours. If you'd want a sweater, you have a little longer, but still aim for the same day.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

In hot, humid climates, the cost of preservation doesn't stop at delivery. Any preserved pet, freeze-dried or mounted, needs a sealed case and a dry, air-conditioned room, and silica gel packs need replacing. Count those in when you compare preservation with simpler keepsakes, such as a paw print or a lock of fur.

Rules worth knowing in China

Keeping a preserved pet you loved is legal almost everywhere, but selling or passing on some preserved species later can be restricted, especially birds and reptiles covered by wildlife-trade rules. Keep the practitioner's invoice, your pet's purchase or breeder records and any permits with the finished piece, so its origin is never in doubt. Remains you don't keep follow the China guidance below.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment rather than after it, which gives the clinic time to work out where your pet will go afterward.
  2. Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible when placing the catheter or giving the injection, and find out which leg they intend to use.
  3. Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so your pet can go straight from the room to a freezer, yours or the clinic's.
  4. Take your time saying goodbye, and afterward, while your pet is still soft, arrange them into the sleeping or curled position you want.
  5. If you've already picked a practitioner, ask them beforehand how they want your pet bagged and shaped for freezing.
  6. Note the time of death and the time of freezing in your phone; those two times are the first things any practitioner asks.

Once the finished piece is home in Beijing

Pets in Beijing are often part of three generations living close together, and grandparents may have been the ones caring for the animal every day. Include them in the goodbye. A short farewell before cremation, at home or at the provider, can give the whole family a moment together. Ask what's possible, including whether you can see your pet before or be present during the cremation.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in China?

For people, yes: about 50%[1] of China deaths end in cremation, according to Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Beijing follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is freeze-drying or taxidermy better for my pet?

Neither is better in general. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's actual body and suits sleeping or lying poses; it takes longer and is more sensitive to humidity. Taxidermy fits tanned skin over a sculpted form, allows sitting or alert poses and depends heavily on the artist's sculpting. Freeze-drying is the more common choice, at 62.3%[6] of the market by one industry estimate.

How do I look after a preserved pet at home?

Protect it from sunlight, damp and insects. Direct sun fades fur, humid air can soften freeze-dried tissue and moths or carpet beetles can damage fur over time. Keep the piece in a dry room away from bathrooms and heating vents, dust it with a soft makeup brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. A glass case helps with all three.

Do emergency hospitals in Beijing hold pets for preservation?

Many can, but it isn't their routine, so be explicit. Tell the front desk you're considering preservation, ask them to freeze your pet rather than refrigerate, and ask for a note on the aftercare form saying your pet must not be cremated. Ask how long they can hold your pet and whether there's a storage fee.

What if I don't know how warm it was when my pet died?

Tell the practitioner exactly what you do know: roughly when your pet died, where they were lying, whether the heating or air conditioning was on, and the time they were frozen. A practitioner can often judge suitability from that plus a few photos, and some will assess your pet once they arrive. Freeze your pet now either way, since nothing is lost by it.

Are waiting lists longer for practitioners in big cities?

Not necessarily, because most pet preservers take work from all over the country, so their queues depend on reputation more than location. A studio near Beijing might be booked for months, while one several states away could start sooner. Ask each one when your pet would actually go into the chamber, not just when they'll receive them.
