Preserving a pet from Lyon: the local picture

A farewell for a pet in Lyon might be a candle lit at home, a few words from each person around the table, or a gathering of friends when the ashes return. Some families visit a pet cemetery together and choose a place for a plaque. If you want to spend time with your pet before cremation, or be present at collection, tell the provider when you arrange it so they can allow for it.

Children in Lyon families often need clear, gentle explanations when a pet dies, without euphemisms that confuse them. Giving them a role, like choosing a photo, drawing a picture or placing flowers, helps them take part. Adults may find the grief returns on the anniversary, or around La Toussaint at the start of November, when many French families visit graves and remember the people, and animals, they have lost.

If your pet dies overnight in Lyon, you'll probably be at a 24-hour emergency hospital. Staff there deal with grief every day but rarely with preservation requests. Ask them to write on the release or aftercare form that your pet is being held for preservation and must not be cremated, and ask when you need to collect your pet or arrange a courier.

With roughly 513,000 residents, Lyon is the largest of the 2 Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes communities we cover.

Lyon sits within easy reach of Grenoble (59 miles) and Dijon (108 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Lyon; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Aftercare traditions in France, and choosing to preserve

Cremation covers only around 44.91%[1] of funerals in France, and pets are often buried on family land. If you're preserving just part of your pet, the rest can usually go into the ground, which gives you a grave to visit and a keepsake indoors. Ask the practitioner whether they can return the remaining body frozen and sealed, or whether they would arrange cremation instead.

For the France figure we rely on ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Lyon rather than as pet data.

How Lyon weather changes your timeline

Without local climate records for Lyon, plan around the practical risks instead. How reliable is the power? Where is the nearest place selling dry ice? Could a neighbor hold your pet if your freezer failed? Answering those three questions before you need to is the most useful weather planning you can do.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for continental Europe, so the table below shows the closest honest reference: UK and US price lists. In the UK, one guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about £800–£1,500[5], and US guides give $1,000–$2,500[6]. European practitioners set their own prices in euros, so ask for a written quote.

We keep the detailed Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes price table on one page so it stays current: see Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes prices.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes

Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.

In France, a few taxidermistes and naturalistes accept pets, some offering freeze-drying (lyophilisation) as well as traditional mounting. Protected wild species are tightly regulated, so a native bird or tortoise may need paperwork; domestic cats and dogs are usually straightforward. Your vet will usually assume cremation (incinération), so ask them to freeze your pet and hold them for preservation instead.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic to where you happen to be, and ask if they have a freezer your pet could go into today.
  2. Ask how long they could hold your pet, and find out if they'd release your pet to a courier or practitioner straight from their premises.
  3. If you have to drive home, pick up a rigid cooler and dry ice; if dry ice isn't available, use plenty of bagged ice. Seal your pet in two bags and put a towel between them and the ice.
  4. Check the ice every few hours during the drive, and don't leave the cooler behind in a car sitting in the sun.
  5. Keep the clinic's paperwork, with the date, weight and cause of death, because the practitioner will want it.
  6. Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and take their advice on whether your pet should travel from the clinic or from home.

Remembering your pet while you wait

Lyon is a sociable city of cafés and shared meals, but losing a pet can make home feel suddenly quiet. Talk to someone who understood the bond, such as a friend, family member or your vet, or a pet loss support service. Some people find comfort in revisiting places they loved together, like the Parc de la Tête d'Or or the banks of the Rhône.

Questions people ask

Why does the Lyon page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lyon?

Usually yes. Grenoble is about 59 miles away and Dijon is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?

Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.

Will my preserved pet look like they did when alive?

They'll look like your pet at rest, not like a living animal. Fur, markings and body shape usually come through well. Faces are harder: noses can darken, lips and eyelids shrink slightly, and open eyes are usually glass. Closed-eye sleeping poses tend to look most natural, and lots of reference photos help the practitioner capture what made your pet recognizable.

What should I send the practitioner besides my pet?

Photographs, and plenty of them. The face in good daylight from the front and both sides, how your pet's ears and eyes looked when relaxed, their favorite sleeping position and any unusual markings. Mention quirks too, like a tongue that always poked out. Practitioners never met your pet, so these details are what make the finished piece look like them rather than any cat or dog.

Can I pay extra to get my preserved pet back sooner?

Some practitioners offer a rush service. One US studio cuts freeze-dry turnaround to six to eight weeks for 50% more[8]. It's rarely necessary, because a well-frozen pet can wait safely. Rushing can make sense if you're moving, or if the wait itself is weighing on you, but ask what the faster timeline changes about the work.
