Pet Preservation in France: what to know
For families in France, the biggest hurdle is often the freezer, not the practitioner. A pet needs to be frozen within hours and kept frozen without a break, sometimes for weeks. Clinic freezers, borrowed chest freezers and dry ice during outages are what the whole process rests on, wherever in France you live.
Pet preservation in France is a small specialty. Most practitioners are one- or two-person studios, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife. Families usually choose from a national shortlist by the quality of their pet work, then get their pet to the studio frozen, by courier, overnight shipping or a single drive.

How France thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
At about 44.91%[2], the cremation rate in France is low, and faith communities here often hold clear customs about the dead. Some welcome a keepsake; others would rather the body rest undisturbed. If you're unsure where your tradition stands, ask a faith leader before committing. Many families find a painted portrait or a cast of a paw sits more easily than tissue kept above ground.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
For local context, a German consumer guide lists individual pet cremation at EUR 165 to 375[3], and a Dutch comparison site found an average of about EUR 300[4]. Whole-body freeze-drying or taxidermy of a cat will cost several times that, so ask practitioners for euro prices for both full and partial work before you decide.
Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[5] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[6] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, small to medium dog | £2,500–£6,000[7] | United Kingdom |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[1] | United States |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[8] | United States |

What France rules mean for a preserved pet
Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in France apply.
In France, a few taxidermistes and naturalistes accept pets, some offering freeze-drying (lyophilisation) as well as traditional mounting. Protected wild species are tightly regulated, so a native bird or tortoise may need paperwork; domestic cats and dogs are usually straightforward. Your vet will usually assume cremation (incinération), so ask them to freeze your pet and hold them for preservation instead.
Just lost your pet? An order to follow
- Don't rush into a decision, rush into a freezer. Which method and which practitioner are questions that can wait.
- Keep your pet away from warmth: no soft bedding, no sunny window, no car.
- Wrap them in two heavy bags, air pressed out, and freeze within hours.
- Talk with the people you live with about where a preserved pet would live and who would see it every day.
- Look at finished pets of your species from each practitioner, ideally unedited photos in daylight.
- Ask for a written quote covering base, chosen pose, shipping there and back, and later touch-ups.
- Expect a long wait, and think about how to honor your pet in the meantime; a small memorial at home is one way.
Other ways to keep your pet close
Living pets and a preserved one need a plan. Cats may sniff, rub against or knock a freeze-dried companion off a shelf, and a young dog may carry off a small piece. Place it high or behind glass. Once a year, look underneath for fine dust or tiny shed skins, early signs of carpet beetles, and ask your practitioner about touch-ups if you spot fading.

Questions people ask
Are preservation prices in France different from US price lists?
Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.
How long does pet preservation take for families in France?
Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[10], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[8]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.
Can I visit a practitioner's studio from France before sending my pet?
Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.
What should I do first if my pet dies in France and I might want them preserved?
Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in France?
Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
Does it matter which vet in France my pet is with when they die?
Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.
