Pet Preservation in Normandy

Pet Preservation in Normandy: what to know

Nobody in Normandy should feel rushed into preservation. Clinics, crematories and even kind relatives may press for a quick decision, usually for good reasons of their own. A frozen pet takes that pressure away. You can take a week, compare written quotes, look at partial keepsakes and talk it through at home before committing.

Our 1 local pages for Normandy start from the same advice, because it holds as true in Normandy as in Normandy: freeze quickly, keep your pet frozen, then choose. What changes is the practical detail, such as where freezer space is easiest to find, how far the nearest overnight shipping counter is and whether heat or winter storms pose the bigger risk in the first days.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation

Cremation covers only around 44.91%[1] of funerals in Normandy, and pets are often buried on family land. If you're preserving just part of your pet, the rest can usually go into the ground, which gives you a grave to visit and a keepsake indoors. Ask the practitioner whether they can return the remaining body frozen and sealed, or whether they would arrange cremation instead.

ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) publishes the Normandy rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Published prices and waits for Normandy owners

Across Europe, pet preservation specialists are few, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife and hunting trophies. Ask a practitioner how many pets of your species they've finished, and what they charge by weight. Moving a pet's body between countries falls under animal by-product rules, so check paperwork before sending anything across a border.

Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Normandy

Preserving a domestic pet is generally allowed, and most rules that touch taxidermy are about wildlife. Many places license taxidermists who work on game animals and restrict what can be done with native wild birds and protected reptiles. A cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. If your pet is a native species, ask the practitioner which permits apply before you ship. Burial and scattering rules only come into it for any part of your pet that's buried or cremated.

In France, a few taxidermistes and naturalistes accept pets, some offering freeze-drying (lyophilisation) as well as traditional mounting. Protected wild species are tightly regulated, so a native bird or tortoise may need paperwork; domestic cats and dogs are usually straightforward. Your vet will usually assume cremation (incinération), so ask them to freeze your pet and hold them for preservation instead.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Freeze first, decide later. Once your pet is frozen and stays that way, taking a few weeks to choose does no harm.
  2. Blot, don't wash. Pat away any fluid with a paper towel and leave the fur dry.
  3. Pose gently and bag tightly. A natural sleeping curl, then two heavy bags with the air pressed out to prevent freezer burn on the face and ears.
  4. Plan for a power cut. Work out now where dry ice or a spare freezer could come from, in case the power stayed off longer than a day.
  5. Ask two or three practitioners whether they take your species and size, how long their queue is and how they want your pet delivered.
  6. Ship or drop off frozen; if it's going by courier, send it at the start of the week and request a message as soon as it's in their hands.

Once the finished piece is home in Normandy

Photographs remain the simplest memorial of all, and they help a preservation practitioner too. Gather the ones you love: sleeping, playing, the particular way your pet tilted their head. Some families have a portrait painted from the same photos, which can hang near the preserved pet or stand in for one if you decide against it.

Questions people ask

What should I do first if my pet dies in Normandy and I might want them preserved?

Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.

Are preservation prices in Normandy different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Normandy?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Normandy, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

How long does pet preservation take for families in Normandy?

Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[6]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.

Can I ship my pet from Normandy to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Normandy?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
