Preserving your pet from Marseille: the first hours and beyond

Marseille, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur

Arranging preservation from Marseille: the practical side

The hot, bright Marseille summer can make grief feel strangely out of place, while the mistral can make winter days feel harsh and restless. Try to keep some structure: time by the sea in the early morning or evening, a regular call with a friend, something small at the end of the day. If sadness still sits heavily after several weeks, a counsellor or your médecin traitant can suggest support.

Marseille's mix of cultures means families bring many traditions to a death, from Catholic prayers and candles to Muslim, Jewish, Armenian and Comorian customs. Whatever your background, you can shape your pet's farewell around what feels right, and it is reasonable to ask a provider for time for a short prayer or ritual before collection. Keeping a photo out for a few weeks afterwards gives the household a place to pause.

Rush-hour traffic in Marseille can turn a twenty-minute drive to the emergency clinic into an hour. If your pet has died in the house and you're heading out to find freezer space, phone first so the clinic is ready, and bring a cooler with ice rather than a blanket on the back seat. In a big city, some appliance stores deliver a small chest freezer the same day, which can be quicker than crossing town.

About 861,000 people live in Marseille, which makes it the largest of the 6 Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur communities we cover.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Toulon (31 miles), Saint-Tropez (64 miles) and Montpellier (78 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation, burial and preservation in France

Cremation covers only around 44.91%[1] of funerals in France, and pets are often buried on family land. If you're preserving just part of your pet, the rest can usually go into the ground, which gives you a grave to visit and a keepsake indoors. Ask the practitioner whether they can return the remaining body frozen and sealed, or whether they would arrange cremation instead.

We take the France rate from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Marseille, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Keeping your pet frozen through Marseille's weather

Without local climate records for Marseille, plan around the practical risks instead. How reliable is the power? Where is the nearest place selling dry ice? Could a neighbor hold your pet if your freezer failed? Answering those three questions before you need to is the most useful weather planning you can do.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur

Preserving a domestic pet is generally allowed, and most rules that touch taxidermy are about wildlife. Many places license taxidermists who work on game animals and restrict what can be done with native wild birds and protected reptiles. A cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. If your pet is a native species, ask the practitioner which permits apply before you ship. Burial and scattering rules only come into it for any part of your pet that's buried or cremated.

In France, a few taxidermistes and naturalistes accept pets, some offering freeze-drying (lyophilisation) as well as traditional mounting. Protected wild species are tightly regulated, so a native bird or tortoise may need paperwork; domestic cats and dogs are usually straightforward. Your vet will usually assume cremation (incinération), so ask them to freeze your pet and hold them for preservation instead.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Tell your vet or clinic straight away that preservation is on the table; otherwise your pet may go out with the cremation pickup that afternoon.
  2. Lay your pet in a relaxed position on their side, legs gently folded, before the body stiffens. Don't wash or brush them.
  3. Double-bag them in heavy plastic bags, pressing out as much air as you can, and seal each bag.
  4. Put them in the coldest freezer available inside a few hours; a refrigerator isn't cold enough. Once they're in, resist the urge to open the bags and check.
  5. Take photos you already have and gather more: the face from different sides, the natural set of the ears, every marking. Your practitioner works from these.
  6. Choose a practitioner by their pet work, then make sure cost, deposit, return date and how they'll travel are written down before your pet leaves the house.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

Marseille is a warm, expressive city, and grief is often shared openly with family and neighbours rather than kept behind closed doors. If your pet was known in your building or on your street, let people know; the neighbour who fed it during the holidays may want to say goodbye too. A small farewell at home, a candle, or a meal with family can help everyone mark the loss before the cremation.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Marseille?

Usually yes. Toulon is about 31 miles away, Saint-Tropez is about 64 miles away and Montpellier is about 78 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Marseille page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

What should I do if my pet dies while we're away from home?

Call the closest clinic or animal hospital wherever you are and ask for your pet to go into their freezer today, even if you're just passing through. Check how many days they could keep your pet, and whether a courier or the practitioner could pick up from there. If you'll be driving home together, use a hard cooler with dry ice, or ice you replace as it melts, and keep it out of the sun.

Can a pet courier take my pet from Marseille to a practitioner?

Sometimes. A few pet couriers and pet transport services in big cities will move a frozen pet by road, packed with dry ice in an insulated box. Ask the practitioner first whether they accept deliveries that way and whether they know a courier they trust. Confirm in writing that your pet stays frozen the whole way, and ask for a text when they arrive.

What should I send the practitioner besides my pet?

Photographs, and plenty of them. The face in good daylight from the front and both sides, how your pet's ears and eyes looked when relaxed, their favorite sleeping position and any unusual markings. Mention quirks too, like a tongue that always poked out. Practitioners never met your pet, so these details are what make the finished piece look like them rather than any cat or dog.

Can a pet still be preserved after a post-mortem?

Usually not as a whole-body piece, because a post-mortem (necropsy) involves incisions and removing tissue. A smaller piece, like a paw, the tail or feathers, may still be possible if those areas weren't affected. If you want both answers about how your pet died and a preserved piece, talk to your vet and a practitioner before the examination, not after.
