Pet Preservation in Sicily: what to know
Pet preservation in Sicily works much the same way everywhere, because the specialists are so few. Most families don't have a pet preserver in their own town, and many don't have one in the state. What they can do locally is the part that matters most: get their pet frozen within hours, keep them frozen and choose a practitioner calmly from a wider shortlist.
Across Sicily, the big difference between cities and small towns is the first day, not the preservation itself. In larger cities such as Palermo and Catania, you'll find emergency hospitals that can hold a pet frozen and carriers that collect late. In rural areas, a home chest freezer and a drive to a shipping depot often do the same job.
We cover 2 communities in Sicily, from Palermo and Catania.

How Sicily thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
At about 38.16%[2], the cremation rate in Sicily is low, and faith communities here often hold clear customs about the dead. Some welcome a keepsake; others would rather the body rest undisturbed. If you're unsure where your tradition stands, ask a faith leader before committing. Many families find a painted portrait or a cast of a paw sits more easily than tissue kept above ground.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Sicily rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Preservation prices beside other aftercare
Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.
For local context, a German consumer guide lists individual pet cremation at EUR 165 to 375[3], and a Dutch comparison site found an average of about EUR 300[4]. Whole-body freeze-drying or taxidermy of a cat will cost several times that, so ask practitioners for euro prices for both full and partial work before you decide.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[5] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[6] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, small to medium dog | £2,500–£6,000[7] | United Kingdom |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[1] | United States |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[8] | United States |

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Sicily
Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for Sicily apply to that part.
In Italy, some tassidermisti accept pets alongside wildlife, and a few offer freeze-drying (liofilizzazione). Protected wild species need documentation; domestic cats and dogs usually don't. Ask your vet to freeze your pet rather than arrange cremation while you decide, and see finished pets of your species before agreeing a price.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic wherever you are, and ask whether they can freeze your pet today.
- Ask how long they could hold your pet, and whether a practitioner or courier could collect from them directly.
- If you have to drive home, pick up a rigid cooler and dry ice; if dry ice isn't available, use plenty of bagged ice. Seal your pet in two bags and put a towel between them and the ice.
- Check the ice every few hours during the drive, and don't leave the cooler behind in a car sitting in the sun.
- Keep the clinic's paperwork, with the date, weight and cause of death, because the practitioner will want it.
- Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and take their advice on whether your pet should travel from the clinic or from home.
Keepsakes, displays and gentler options
The months of waiting can be the hardest part. Some owners mark them with a small memorial at home, such as a candle, a photo and their pet's collar, which later moves aside when the preserved pet returns. Others write down memories while they're fresh, which also helps the practitioner get the details right.

Questions people ask
Does it matter which vet in Sicily my pet is with when they die?
Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.
How many communities do you cover in Sicily?
We have local pet preservation pages for 2 communities in Sicily, including Palermo and Catania. Each one covers how to freeze and hold your pet there, what the local weather means for the first hours, shipping to a practitioner, and published prices.
How long does pet preservation take for families in Sicily?
Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[10], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[8]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.
How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Sicily?
Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Sicily before sending my pet?
Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.
What if nobody in Sicily preserves pets?
Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.
