Catania, Sicily
Where Catania owners find freezer space and practitioners
Children in Sicilian families are often very close to the family pet, and a loss can be their first experience of death. Honest, simple words help more than euphemisms, and letting them draw a picture, choose a photo or help place the urn gives them a role. If you or anyone in the family is struggling for a long time, a counselor or an online pet loss group is a sensible place to turn.
A farewell for a pet in Catania can be simple: a moment together at home with family before the pet is collected, or a small gathering later when the ashes come back. Some families like to be present at a private cremation, while others prefer not to. Tell us what matters to you when you get in touch, and we'll email options from providers who can include those parts.
If your vet in Catania can't hold your pet frozen, a larger centre such as Catania may have an emergency hospital with more freezer space. Call before you drive. Carry your pet wrapped in a cooler with ice packs or bagged ice, keep the car cool and go straight there, because every warm hour matters for the fur.
With roughly 311,000 residents, Catania is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Sicily communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Palermo (103 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation, burial and preservation in Italy
With cremation at about 38.16%[1] of human deaths in Italy, aftercare here leans towards burial and toward keeping things close to home. Pet preservation specialists are scarce in most places and scarcer where there's less demand for aftercare services generally, so expect to look further afield and to ship or drive your pet to someone well outside your area.
For the Italy figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Catania rather than as pet data.
Keeping your pet frozen through Catania's weather
In any climate, think about power. If Catania loses electricity while your pet is in the freezer, keep it shut, insulate it with blankets and look for dry ice if the outage lasts more than a day. Thawing and refreezing damages fur and skin in ways a practitioner can't fully repair.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them
Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Sicily
Keeping a preserved pet you loved is legal almost everywhere, but selling or passing on some preserved species later can be restricted, especially birds and reptiles covered by wildlife-trade rules. Keep the practitioner's invoice, your pet's purchase or breeder records and any permits with the finished piece, so its origin is never in doubt. Remains you don't keep follow the Sicily guidance below.
In Italy, some tassidermisti accept pets alongside wildlife, and a few offer freeze-drying (liofilizzazione). Protected wild species need documentation; domestic cats and dogs usually don't. Ask your vet to freeze your pet rather than arrange cremation while you decide, and see finished pets of your species before agreeing a price.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Tell your vet or clinic straight away that you're considering preservation, so your pet isn't sent for cremation with the day's collection.
- Lay your pet in a relaxed position while they're still limp: resting on one side with the legs tucked softly. Leave the coat unbrushed and unwashed.
- Double-bag them using two thick plastic bags, squeezing the air from each one before you close it.
- Put them in the coldest freezer available inside a few hours; a refrigerator isn't cold enough. Once they're in, resist the urge to open the bags and check.
- Take photos you already have and gather more: the face from different sides, the natural set of the ears, every marking. Your practitioner works from these.
- Choose a practitioner by their pet work, then make sure cost, deposit, return date and how they'll travel are written down before your pet leaves the house.
Other ways to keep your pet close
In a city as sociable as Catania, people may expect you to carry on as normal after losing a pet. But an animal who shared your home for years leaves a real gap, and grief for a pet is normal and can take weeks or months. Talking to friends who knew your pet helps, as does keeping a small routine, like an evening stroll by the sea at the hour you used to spend together.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Catania follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How do I look after a preserved pet at home?
Protect it from sunlight, damp and insects. Direct sun fades fur, humid air can soften freeze-dried tissue and moths or carpet beetles can damage fur over time. Keep the piece in a dry room away from bathrooms and heating vents, dust it with a soft makeup brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. A glass case helps with all three.
What if my family doesn't want a preserved pet at home?
It's common for one person to love the idea while another finds it upsetting. Freezing your pet buys time to talk it over. Many families settle on a middle path: a preserved paw or a few feathers kept in one person's room, a paw cast, or cremation with a lock of fur. Decide together where any piece would be kept and who has to see it.
Can I send my pet to a practitioner in another European country?
Sometimes, but a pet's body counts as an animal by-product under EU rules, so moving it between countries can require commercial documents and an approved carrier. Ask the practitioner what they need before you pack anything. Finding someone in your own country is often simpler, even if it means a longer drive.
Is it worth driving my pet to a practitioner instead of shipping?
If the drive is manageable, it removes the worry about a delayed parcel, and you get to meet the practitioner and see their work. Pack your pet frozen in a cooler with dry ice or plenty of bagged ice, keep the car cool and go straight there. For a long distance, overnight shipping early in the week is usually safer than a multi-day drive.
Can I preserve just a paw or tail and have the rest of my pet cremated?
Yes, and many families find it easier to live with than a full-body piece. The practitioner preserves the paw, tail, wing or feathers, and the rest of your pet goes to a cremation provider. Agree in writing who handles the handover and that the cremation is private, so the ashes you get back are your pet's alone. Partial work usually costs far less and takes less time.
