Pet Preservation in South Korea: what to know
Preserving a pet in South Korea usually means waiting months. Freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[1], and a practitioner's queue adds more. Families who cope with the wait best tend to have chosen carefully, agreed everything in writing and found a small way to mark the months while their pet is away.
Whatever part of South Korea you live in, the first hours decide whether preservation is possible. Freeze your pet within hours, double-bagged, and keep them frozen without interruption. Once that's done, you have weeks to choose a method, find a practitioner and agree a price. This page covers South Korea as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

Why preservation means speaking up early in South Korea
Cremation is chosen for about 92.43%[2] of deaths in South Korea, and local pet crematories have built whole menus around it: engraved urns, clay paw prints, fur clippings. That's useful even if you're drawn to preservation, because it shows how much can be kept without keeping the body. If you're torn, freeze first, ask a crematory which keepsakes they'd return with the ashes and compare that with a practitioner's quote.
That South Korea rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Preservation prices beside other aftercare
For a sense of scale, cremating a small pet in Tokyo costs from JPY 14,300 communal to JPY 22,000 individual[3], and private cremation of a cat in Singapore starts around SGD 280[4]. Where full preservation is offered, expect a multiple of those figures, and get a written price in local currency before handing your pet over.
Pet preservation specialists are rare across most of Asia, and shipping a pet's body abroad for the work usually involves export and import permits. For many families, that makes a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur, a paw print or a small preserved piece done locally, a more realistic option than full-body work.

What South Korea rules mean for a preserved pet
Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.
In South Korea, licensed pet funeral facilities handle most pet aftercare, and preservation specialists are very few. Tell the funeral provider or vet early if you want your pet frozen and held rather than cremated. Many families choose a partial keepsake, such as fur or a paw print, or a memorial item made from the ashes, instead of full-body work.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Tell your child what's happening in simple words before their pet goes into the freezer, so it isn't a secret kept in the kitchen.
- Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, which keeps bags of frozen food from pressing down on them.
- Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
- Explain the wait honestly: it will be months, and when their pet comes back they'll look like they're sleeping, not awake.
- Make a memory box together during the months of waiting, filling it with a drawing, a favorite photo and the name card off the cage.
- Agree where the finished piece will live, somewhere your child can see it without handling it every day.
Living with a preserved pet in South Korea
A preserved pet doesn't need a big display. Many families in South Korea keep theirs on a low shelf or in a quiet corner, curled on a favorite blanket, where they can see them without being startled. Keep the piece out of direct sun and away from damp rooms, dust it gently with a soft brush and check for moths now and then.

Questions people ask
How long does pet preservation take for families in South Korea?
Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[10], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[1]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.
Can I ship my pet from South Korea to a practitioner elsewhere?
Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in South Korea?
Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of South Korea, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.
Is there a pet taxidermist in South Korea?
There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in South Korea mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.
How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in South Korea?
Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
Are preservation prices in South Korea different from US price lists?
Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.
