Pet Preservation in Seoul

Pet Preservation in Seoul: what to know

Practitioners who accept pets from Seoul are usually chosen for their finished animals, not their address. Before contacting anyone, gather your pet's species and weight, a few clear photos and a note of when they died and when they were frozen. With that, a practitioner can give you a straight answer about suitability in a single email.

Across Seoul, the big difference between cities and small towns is the first day, not the preservation itself. In larger cities such as Seoul and Gangnam, you'll find emergency hospitals that can hold a pet frozen and carriers that collect late. In rural areas, a home chest freezer and a drive to a shipping depot often do the same job.

Cremation, burial and preservation in Seoul

With about 92.43%[1] of people in Seoul choosing cremation, most friends and relatives will assume your pet's ashes are coming home. A preserved pet can surprise people. It helps to have a simple sentence ready, such as that you wanted to keep them as they were. Nobody needs more than that, and most people understand once they see how much care went into it.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Seoul

In hot, humid climates, the cost of preservation doesn't stop at delivery. Any preserved pet, freeze-dried or mounted, needs a sealed case and a dry, air-conditioned room, and silica gel packs need replacing. Count those in when you compare preservation with simpler keepsakes, such as a paw print or a lock of fur.

Pet preservation specialists are rare across most of Asia, and shipping a pet's body abroad for the work usually involves export and import permits. For many families, that makes a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur, a paw print or a small preserved piece done locally, a more realistic option than full-body work.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Seoul

Keeping a preserved pet you loved is legal almost everywhere, but selling or passing on some preserved species later can be restricted, especially birds and reptiles covered by wildlife-trade rules. Keep the practitioner's invoice, your pet's purchase or breeder records and any permits with the finished piece, so its origin is never in doubt. Remains you don't keep follow the Seoul guidance below.

In South Korea, licensed pet funeral facilities handle most pet aftercare, and preservation specialists are very few. Tell the funeral provider or vet early if you want your pet frozen and held rather than cremated. Many families choose a partial keepsake, such as fur or a paw print, or a memorial item made from the ashes, instead of full-body work.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment, not afterward, so the clinic can plan where your pet will be held once they've died.
  2. Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible when placing the catheter or giving the injection, and find out which leg they intend to use.
  3. Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so there's no delay between the appointment and a freezer, whether that's at home or at the clinic.
  4. Take your time saying goodbye, and afterward, while your pet is still soft, arrange them into the sleeping or curled position you want.
  5. If you've already picked a practitioner, ask them beforehand how they want your pet bagged and shaped for freezing.
  6. Note the time of death and the time of freezing in your phone; those two times are the first things any practitioner asks.

Living with a preserved pet in Seoul

A preserved pet doesn't need a big display. Many families in Seoul keep theirs on a low shelf or in a quiet corner, curled on a favorite blanket, where they can see them without being startled. Keep the piece out of direct sun and away from damp rooms, dust it gently with a soft brush and check for moths now and then.

Questions people ask

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Seoul?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Seoul?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Seoul, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

How long does pet preservation take for families in Seoul?

Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[6]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.

Can I ship my pet from Seoul to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.

Is there a pet taxidermist in Seoul?

There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Seoul mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.

What should I do first if my pet dies in Seoul and I might want them preserved?

Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
