Preserving your pet from Bilbao: the first hours and beyond

Bilbao, Basque Country

Arranging preservation from Bilbao: the practical side

Family is central in Basque life, and many people find comfort in remembering a pet together, sharing photos over a meal or marking the anniversary at home. If grief is still heavy after several weeks, a vet, a counsellor or an online pet loss group can help. Reaching out is a sensible step; losing an animal is a genuine bereavement.

A pet farewell in Bilbao can be very simple: a few minutes together at home before collection, a small gathering of family, or being present at the cremation if that matters to you. Others prefer to remember their pet as they were and receive the ashes later. When you write to us, tell us what feels right, and we'll email you options that include it.

Shipping a frozen pet from Bilbao is more routine than it sounds. Practitioners who accept pets by post usually ask for an overnight service sent on a Monday or Tuesday, so the box never sits in a depot over a weekend. Before you pack anything, ask your chosen practitioner which carrier and service they want, and whether they'll book the collection for you.

Bilbao's population is around 346,000, the largest of the 2 Basque Country communities we cover.

Our pages for Santander (46 miles), San Sebastian (48 miles) and Pamplona (72 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Bilbao as well.

50.11%[1]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

Freeze-drying a pet typically costs USD 1,000–2,000.

Freeze-dry preservation takes 3–6 months for small pets, 7+ months for large dogs and up to a year for very large animals.

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and Astute Analytica via GlobeNewswire.

A pet at home in Bilbao

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation

About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain choose cremation. Attitudes are shifting, and that openness extends to pets, where families increasingly want something personal rather than the standard option. Preservation is the most personal of all, and still unusual. Expect to explain what you want to your vet more than once, and to find the practitioner yourself.

Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) is where the Spain figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Bilbao tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

How Bilbao's climate affects the first hours

Without local climate records for Bilbao, plan around the practical risks instead. How reliable is the power? Where is the nearest place selling dry ice? Could a neighbor hold your pet if your freezer failed? Answering those three questions before you need to is the most useful weather planning you can do.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare

Traditional taxidermy tends to cost more than freeze-drying for dogs. One UK studio charges £2,500–£6,000[5] for a small to medium dog, which gives you a sense of the effort involved. Whatever the method, add delivery, a base or case and any touch-ups to the headline price before comparing quotes.

The full price table by product is on our Basque Country page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Basque Country

If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for Basque Country below covers the rest.

In Spain, a small number of taxidermistas take pets, some offering freeze-drying (liofilización). Summer heat across much of the country makes freezing within hours essential. Protected native species are tightly regulated; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Ask for a written price in euros and an estimated return date before sending your pet.

What to do first if you might preserve your pet

  1. Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic wherever you are, and ask whether they can freeze your pet today.
  2. Ask how long they could hold your pet, and whether a practitioner or courier could collect from them directly.
  3. If you have to drive home, pick up a rigid cooler and dry ice; if dry ice isn't available, use plenty of bagged ice. Seal your pet in two bags and put a towel between them and the ice.
  4. Check the ice every few hours during the drive, and don't leave the cooler behind in a car sitting in the sun.
  5. Keep the clinic's paperwork, with the date, weight and cause of death, because the practitioner will want it.
  6. Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and take their advice on whether your pet should travel from the clinic or from home.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

Losing a pet in a city apartment can leave a sudden silence at home. The pet who greeted you at the door or sat at the window watching the ría was part of your daily rhythm. Let yourself grieve. Talk to someone who knew your pet, revisit a place that feels peaceful, and don't feel you need to explain your sadness to anyone.

Questions people ask

Why does the Bilbao page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Bilbao?

The closest communities we cover are Santander (about 46 miles), San Sebastian (about 48 miles) and Pamplona (about 72 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Bilbao too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

What should I send the practitioner besides my pet?

Photographs, and plenty of them. The face in good daylight from the front and both sides, how your pet's ears and eyes looked when relaxed, their favorite sleeping position and any unusual markings. Mention quirks too, like a tongue that always poked out. Practitioners never met your pet, so these details are what make the finished piece look like them rather than any cat or dog.

Is there a pet taxidermist in Bilbao?

Possibly, but pet specialists are rare everywhere, so don't assume the closest taxidermist is the right one. Many mount game animals and see few pets. Most families choose a practitioner by the quality of their finished cats, dogs or birds, then ship their pet frozen overnight or drive it there. Tell us your pet's species and weight, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from Bilbao.

What if the power goes out while my pet is in the freezer?

Keep the freezer shut and cover it with blankets for insulation. US food-safety guidance says a full freezer holds its temperature for about two days and a half-full one about a day, if the door stays closed. If the outage will run longer, buy dry ice, handle it with gloves and place it on top, or move your pet to a freezer that has power.

Can a pet still be preserved after a post-mortem?

Usually not as a whole-body piece, because a post-mortem (necropsy) involves incisions and removing tissue. A smaller piece, like a paw, the tail or feathers, may still be possible if those areas weren't affected. If you want both answers about how your pet died and a preserved piece, talk to your vet and a practitioner before the examination, not after.
