Pet Preservation in Spain: what to know

Prices for pet preservation in Spain depend more on the pet than on the place. Size, species, pose and method drive the quote, and delivery can add a meaningful amount where distances are long. Where we've found published prices, we show them; where we haven't, we say so and give overseas figures for scale.

In Spain, as in most places, vets and emergency clinics are set up for cremation, so preservation needs a clear request. Tell them early you want your pet frozen and held, not collected. Rules mostly concern wild and native species; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Moving a pet's body across a border is the exception, and usually needs paperwork.

We cover 17 communities in Spain, from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia to smaller towns.

A pet and its family in Spain

Why preservation means speaking up early in Spain

About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain choose cremation. Attitudes are shifting, and that openness extends to pets, where families increasingly want something personal rather than the standard option. Preservation is the most personal of all, and still unusual. Expect to explain what you want to your vet more than once, and to find the practitioner yourself.

Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) publishes the Spain rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Spain

Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.

Traditional taxidermy tends to cost more than freeze-drying for dogs. One UK studio charges £2,500–£6,000[2] for a small to medium dog, which gives you a sense of the effort involved. Whatever the method, add delivery, a base or case and any touch-ups to the headline price before comparing quotes.

When the rules in Spain come into play

Keeping a preserved pet you loved is legal almost everywhere, but selling or passing on some preserved species later can be restricted, especially birds and reptiles covered by wildlife-trade rules. Keep the practitioner's invoice, your pet's purchase or breeder records and any permits with the finished piece, so its origin is never in doubt. Remains you don't keep follow the Spain guidance below.

In Spain, a small number of taxidermistas take pets, some offering freeze-drying (liofilización). Summer heat across much of the country makes freezing within hours essential. Protected native species are tightly regulated; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Ask for a written price in euros and an estimated return date before sending your pet.

A checklist for the first hours

  1. Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment, not afterward, so the clinic can plan where your pet will be held once they've died.
  2. Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible when placing the catheter or giving the injection, and find out which leg they intend to use.
  3. Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so there's no delay between the appointment and a freezer, whether that's at home or at the clinic.
  4. Take your time saying goodbye, and afterward, while your pet is still soft, arrange them into the sleeping or curled position you want.
  5. If you've already picked a practitioner, ask them beforehand how they want your pet bagged and shaped for freezing.
  6. Note the time of death and the time of freezing on your phone. Every practitioner will ask for both.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

The months of waiting can be the hardest part. Some owners mark them with a small memorial at home, such as a candle, a photo and their pet's collar, which later moves aside when the preserved pet returns. Others write down memories while they're fresh, which also helps the practitioner get the details right.

Next: see what each choice includes on services, run your own numbers in the tools, check the poll results, or pick another area from all locations.

Questions people ask

How long does pet preservation take for families in Spain?

Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[6]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.

What if nobody in Spain preserves pets?

Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.

How many communities do you cover in Spain?

We have local pet preservation pages for 17 communities in Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Each one covers how to freeze and hold your pet there, what the local weather means for the first hours, shipping to a practitioner, and published prices.

What should I do first if my pet dies in Spain and I might want them preserved?

Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.

Is there a pet taxidermist in Spain?

There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Spain mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Spain?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Spain, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.
