Arranging preservation from Madrid: the practical side

A pet farewell in Madrid can be a quiet farewell in your own home before collection, a small gathering in the Retiro with close friends, or a remembrance later at a family village. Some crematoria allow families to attend an individual cremation, which can ease the grief of letting go. Tell us your barrio and what you'd like, and we'll email back a short list of options that fit your plans.

Spanish families often gather for big moments, and including children in a pet's farewell can help them understand. Be honest and simple, avoid euphemisms, and let them help with a drawing, a photo or choosing something for the memorial. Grief can return in August or at Christmas, when the pet would normally have been part of the family trip to the pueblo or the gathering at home.

Big cities make the practical side of preservation easier. Dry ice is sold by some grocery stores and ice suppliers, overnight carriers pick up late in the day, and a few pet couriers drive frozen animals between cities. None of that helps if your pet hasn't been frozen properly first, so get the freezing right today and sort out the travel once you've chosen a practitioner.

Madrid is home to about 3,223,000 people.

The closest communities we cover are Valladolid (101 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Madrid too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

A pet at home in Madrid

What local cremation habits mean for your request

In Spain, cremation accounts for about 50.11%[1] of human deaths, so both burial and cremation traditions run through local families. If relatives feel strongly one way, a preserved pet can seem out of step. Many families settle on something in between, like a freeze-dried paw kept on a shelf with the rest of the pet buried or cremated as the family prefers.

We take the Spain rate from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Madrid, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Heat, cold and a freezer that mustn't fail in Madrid

We don't have weather averages for Madrid, so here's a rough rule for anywhere: if you'd be comfortable indoors in a T-shirt, your pet should be frozen within a few hours. If you'd want a sweater, you have a little longer, but still aim for the same day.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

For local context, a German consumer guide lists individual pet cremation at EUR 165 to 375[5], and a Dutch comparison site found an average of about EUR 300[6]. Whole-body freeze-drying or taxidermy of a cat will cost several times that, so ask practitioners for euro prices for both full and partial work before you decide.

When the rules in Spain come into play

Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.

In Spain, a small number of taxidermistas take pets, some offering freeze-drying (liofilización). Summer heat across much of the country makes freezing within hours essential. Protected native species are tightly regulated; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Ask for a written price in euros and an estimated return date before sending your pet.

What to do first if you might preserve your pet

  1. Take a breath. If your pet was frozen quickly, you have time. If they weren't, freeze them now anyway and ask a practitioner honestly.
  2. Describe exactly what happened to any practitioner you contact: when your pet died, how long before freezing, and the temperature.
  3. Choose the pose with the practitioner. Closed-eye sleeping poses usually look the most natural.
  4. Send reference photos, including the face in good light and anything distinctive about how your pet sat or lay.
  5. Pay only the agreed deposit, and keep the written quote, return date and refund terms somewhere safe.
  6. Prepare a spot at home away from sun, damp and heating vents, so your pet has somewhere safe to come back to.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

Madrid's social life often revolves around the street, the terraza and the evening paseo, and many pets are part of that daily rhythm, greeted by neighbors on the stairs and in the local bar. Losing them can leave a gap in routines as well as at home. Share memories with neighbors and friends who knew your pet, and look for pet loss support if grief lingers.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Spain?

For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Madrid follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?

Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.

Can a pet courier take my pet from Madrid to a practitioner?

Sometimes. A few pet couriers and pet transport services in big cities will move a frozen pet by road, packed with dry ice in an insulated box. Ask the practitioner first whether they accept deliveries that way and whether they know a courier they trust. Confirm in writing that your pet stays frozen the whole way, and ask for a text when they arrive.

Does the euthanasia injection affect preservation?

Generally, no. Practitioners routinely work on pets who were put to sleep. What matters far more is what happens next: how much fur was clipped, whether your pet was kept cool and how soon they were frozen. Mention any shaved patches or bandaged areas when you describe your pet, so the practitioner knows what to expect when your pet thaws.

Is there a pet taxidermist in Madrid?

Possibly, but pet specialists are rare everywhere, so don't assume the closest taxidermist is the right one. Many mount game animals and see few pets. Most families choose a practitioner by the quality of their finished cats, dogs or birds, then ship their pet frozen overnight or drive it there. Tell us your pet's species and weight, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from Madrid.

Can I pay extra to get my preserved pet back sooner?

Some practitioners offer a rush service. One US studio cuts freeze-dry turnaround to six to eight weeks for 50% more[8]. It's rarely necessary, because a well-frozen pet can wait safely. Rushing can make sense if you're moving, or if the wait itself is weighing on you, but ask what the faster timeline changes about the work.
