Pet Preservation in Madrid

Pet Preservation in Madrid: what to know

In Madrid, Madrid sees summer highs of about °F, while winter lows fall near °F in Madrid. That range affects preservation in two ways: how fast you need to act after a death, and how a finished piece should be kept at home afterward. Each city page for Madrid covers both.

Weather in Madrid shapes the first hours. Heat makes freezing urgent, because warmth loosens fur within hours; storms and ice can knock out the power to the freezer your pet is waiting in. A simple plan helps: know where dry ice is sold, keep the freezer lid shut in an outage and have a backup freezer in mind.

How Madrid thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits

About 50.11%[2] of people in Madrid choose cremation. Attitudes are shifting, and that openness extends to pets, where families increasingly want something personal rather than the standard option. Preservation is the most personal of all, and still unusual. Expect to explain what you want to your vet more than once, and to find the practitioner yourself.

The cremation figure for Madrid comes from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare

Across Europe, pet preservation specialists are few, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife and hunting trophies. Ask a practitioner how many pets of your species they've finished, and what they charge by weight. Moving a pet's body between countries falls under animal by-product rules, so check paperwork before sending anything across a border.

Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.

Rules worth knowing in Madrid

Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.

In Spain, a small number of taxidermistas take pets, some offering freeze-drying (liofilización). Summer heat across much of the country makes freezing within hours essential. Protected native species are tightly regulated; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Ask for a written price in euros and an estimated return date before sending your pet.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Stop the clock. Warmth is the enemy here; the first thing to do is get your pet down onto the coolest hard floor you have.
  2. Call ahead if your freezer can't take your pet: a vet or emergency clinic may hold them, and ask for a freezer, not a fridge.
  3. Set aside the collar, tags and a favorite blanket. Don't cut or trim the coat yet; the practitioner can tell you where a keepsake lock can safely come from.
  4. Bag and freeze your pet inside a few hours, sealed in two layers and posed as if simply lying down.
  5. Decide on the method: preserving the whole pet by freeze-drying, conventional taxidermy, or keeping just one part and cremating the remainder.
  6. Agree everything in writing, covering what the practitioner does if they find damage after thawing.

Caring for the piece, and for the memories

If cost is what makes you hesitate, you're weighing something real. By our estimate, freeze-drying a cat-sized pet costs roughly ten times a private cremation[8]. Smaller keepsakes close that gap: one US provider lists paw prints and fur clippings at $49–$133[9], depending on framing. Our memorial budget planner helps you set a ceiling before you ask anyone for a quote.

Questions people ask

Is there a pet taxidermist in Madrid?

There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Madrid mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Madrid?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Madrid, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Madrid before sending my pet?

Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Madrid?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

Does it matter which vet in Madrid my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

Can I ship my pet from Madrid to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
