Pet Preservation in Andalusia

Andalusia, Spain

Pet Preservation in Andalusia: what to know

Our 4 local pages for Andalusia start from the same advice, because it holds as true in Andalusia as in Andalusia: freeze quickly, keep your pet frozen, then choose. What changes is the practical detail, such as where freezer space is easiest to find, how far the nearest overnight shipping counter is and whether heat or winter storms pose the bigger risk in the first days.

Pet preservation in Andalusia works much the same way everywhere, because the specialists are so few. Most families don't have a pet preserver in their own town, and many don't have one in the state. What they can do locally is the part that matters most: get their pet frozen within hours, keep them frozen and choose a practitioner calmly from a wider shortlist.

We cover 4 communities in Andalusia, from Seville, Malaga and Granada to smaller towns.

Aftercare traditions in Andalusia, and choosing to preserve

Human cremation sits around 50.11%[1] in Andalusia, and pet aftercare choices are broad as a result: crematories, pet cemeteries, home burial and a few preservers taking work by mail. That choice is welcome, but it also means your vet may assume whichever path is most common at their practice. Put your request in writing, even a quick email, stating that your pet is to be frozen and held.

Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) publishes the Andalusia rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

Traditional taxidermy tends to cost more than freeze-drying for dogs. One UK studio charges £2,500–£6,000[2] for a small to medium dog, which gives you a sense of the effort involved. Whatever the method, add delivery, a base or case and any touch-ups to the headline price before comparing quotes.

For local context, a German consumer guide lists individual pet cremation at EUR 165 to 375[3], and a Dutch comparison site found an average of about EUR 300[4]. Whole-body freeze-drying or taxidermy of a cat will cost several times that, so ask practitioners for euro prices for both full and partial work before you decide.

Rules worth knowing in Andalusia

Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.

In Spain, a small number of taxidermistas take pets, some offering freeze-drying (liofilización). Summer heat across much of the country makes freezing within hours essential. Protected native species are tightly regulated; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Ask for a written price in euros and an estimated return date before sending your pet.

Your checklist, in the order it matters

  1. If your pet is at a clinic, ask the staff to write on the paperwork that your pet is held for preservation and must not be cremated.
  2. Ask them to freeze, not refrigerate, and to keep any clipping of the coat to the bare minimum.
  3. Bring your pet home frozen inside a cooler, or set up a pickup from the clinic by the practitioner or a courier.
  4. Keep your pet frozen solid for at least a day or two before any shipping, as most practitioners ask.
  5. Pack in a thick cooler with dry ice, labeled as the carrier requires, and send overnight on a Monday or Tuesday.
  6. Keep the tracking number and ask the practitioner to confirm your pet went straight into their freezer.

Caring for the piece, and for the memories

Some families combine methods: a preserved paw or tail for one person, ashes for another, and a lock of fur for a relative who lives away. It's a gentle way to respect different feelings in the same household. Agree in writing with the practitioner and cremation provider who handles what, so nothing is lost in the handover.

If Andalusia is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

Can I ship my pet from Andalusia to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.

Does it matter which vet in Andalusia my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

What should I do first if my pet dies in Andalusia and I might want them preserved?

Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Andalusia?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Andalusia, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

Are preservation prices in Andalusia different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

Is there a pet taxidermist in Andalusia?

There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Andalusia mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.
