Pet freeze-drying and taxidermy in Malaga

Malaga, Andalusia

Preserving a pet from Malaga: the local picture

Spanish families are often multigenerational, and grandparents and children may feel a pet's death most. Tell children honestly what happened and invite them to help with a farewell, perhaps painting a stone or choosing a plant. For an older relative, the pet may have been their daily companion; a visit or a meal together in the weeks afterward can matter a great deal.

For foreign residents in Málaga, losing a pet can feel especially isolating, since the animal may have made the move with you and family may be far away. Reach out to friends, neighbors and online communities; many people here have been through the same thing. A small farewell at home before collection, or a short moment at the crematorium, gives the loss a clear beginning.

Many people in Malaga work long hours or travel, so a pet may die while a sitter or neighbor is in charge. If you've ever thought about preservation, leave written instructions with anyone who looks after your pet: freeze within hours, don't wash, and which vet to call. It's an uncomfortable note to write, but it keeps the decision in your hands.

Malaga is home to about 574,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 4 Andalusia communities we cover.

Families in Malaga often end up using a provider from Marbella (29 miles), Granada (55 miles) and Seville (98 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

Freeze-dry preservation takes 3–6 months for small pets, 7+ months for large dogs and up to a year for very large animals.

A pet at home in Malaga

Cremation, burial and preservation in Spain

Roughly 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, and the rest are mostly buried, so families here are used to both ideas. Preservation is a third way of keeping a pet close, and one with a hard deadline: it has to be decided on, at least provisionally, before the body warms. Freeze first, and the burial or cremation choice for anything you don't keep can wait.

Source for the Spain number: Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Malaga, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

Seasons, shipping and humidity in Malaga

Whatever the weather in Malaga, a freezer is the only safe place to hold a pet for preservation. Fridges, cool rooms and outdoor spaces all let the body keep changing. If you don't have space at home, ask your vet, an emergency clinic or a friend with a chest freezer to hold your pet for a few days.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Malaga

Preservation prices beside other aftercare

Across Europe, pet preservation specialists are few, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife and hunting trophies. Ask a practitioner how many pets of your species they've finished, and what they charge by weight. Moving a pet's body between countries falls under animal by-product rules, so check paperwork before sending anything across a border.

Rules worth knowing in Andalusia

Before you commit to preservation, check two things with the practitioner: whether your species needs any permit where they are, and whether they're allowed to receive it. Rules for domestic cats and dogs are light; rules for native birds and reptiles can be strict and vary by place. If the rest of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, check what Andalusia allows for home burial and scattering too.

In Spain, a small number of taxidermistas take pets, some offering freeze-drying (liofilización). Summer heat across much of the country makes freezing within hours essential. Protected native species are tightly regulated; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Ask for a written price in euros and an estimated return date before sending your pet.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Check how warm the room is first. Switch the air conditioning on, or move your pet to whichever concrete or tiled floor in the house stays coldest.
  2. Use what you have tonight. An emptied kitchen freezer shelf, or bagged ice in a cooler with a towel laid over it, keeps a small pet until morning.
  3. Leave the coat dry. Blot the mouth and rear with paper towel only; wet fur freezes into clumps that are harder to work with.
  4. Write down when you found your pet and when they went into the cold, even if you have to estimate.
  5. Phone your vet when they open if your pet won't fit in your freezer, and be clear that a preservation specialist will be taking them.
  6. Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, telling them what kind of animal, how heavy, and attaching a current photo.

Remembering your pet while you wait

Málaga's street life, with evening paseos and neighbors who know each other, means a pet's absence is often noticed. Letting people share memories can help. If you would like a simple ceremony, a gathering on the terrace with a candle and a few words is enough. If grief is still heavy weeks later, a pet loss counselor, in Spanish or English, can help.

Questions people ask

Why does the Malaga page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Malaga?

Usually yes. Marbella is about 29 miles away, Granada is about 55 miles away and Seville is about 98 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I preserve just a paw or tail and have the rest of my pet cremated?

Yes, and many families find it easier to live with than a full-body piece. The practitioner preserves the paw, tail, wing or feathers, and the rest of your pet goes to a cremation provider. Agree in writing who handles the handover and that the cremation is private, so the ashes you get back are your pet's alone. Partial work usually costs far less and takes less time.

Should I tell my vet about preservation before a planned euthanasia?

Yes, ideally when you book. The clinic can then plan to put your pet in a freezer rather than add them to the crematory collection, clip only a small patch of fur for the injection and give you a quiet room with time afterward to settle your pet into a natural shape. If you've already chosen a practitioner, ask them whether they have any requests for the vet, and pass them on.

How do I look after a preserved pet at home?

Protect it from sunlight, damp and insects. Direct sun fades fur, humid air can soften freeze-dried tissue and moths or carpet beetles can damage fur over time. Keep the piece in a dry room away from bathrooms and heating vents, dust it with a soft makeup brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. A glass case helps with all three.

Can I put my pet in the kitchen freezer?

Yes, if they fit and the freezer runs cold, as long as they're sealed in two heavy bags and kept apart from food in a box or bin. Small pets such as hamsters, rats, budgies and kittens fit easily. For a cat or dog, a chest freezer is usually easier. Avoid a fridge for anything longer than a few hours.
