Pet Preservation in Catalonia
Pet preservation is a small craft with few practitioners, so most owners in Catalonia don't have one down the road. That's fine. A pet frozen quickly and kept frozen can travel, and can wait while you choose.

Pet Preservation in Catalonia: what to know
Rules in Catalonia rarely affect a domestic cat or dog, but they can matter for native wild birds, turtles and other protected species. Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to control wildlife trade. If your pet is anything unusual, tell the practitioner the species and where they came from before you ship, and ask which permits apply.
Across Catalonia, the big difference between cities and small towns is the first day, not the preservation itself. In larger cities such as Barcelona, you'll find emergency hospitals that can hold a pet frozen and carriers that collect late. In rural areas, a home chest freezer and a drive to a shipping depot often do the same job.

How Catalonia thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
Roughly 50.11%[1] of those who die in Catalonia are cremated. Whichever way your family leans, preservation doesn't have to replace it. Some families bury the body and keep a cleaned skull; others cremate and keep a single freeze-dried paw. Think about how a preserved piece would fit alongside the ways your family already remembers the people and animals it has lost.

How much to budget for preservation
Across Europe, pet preservation specialists are few, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife and hunting trophies. Ask a practitioner how many pets of your species they've finished, and what they charge by weight. Moving a pet's body between countries falls under animal by-product rules, so check paperwork before sending anything across a border.
For local context, a German consumer guide lists individual pet cremation at EUR 165 to 375[2], and a Dutch comparison site found an average of about EUR 300[3]. Whole-body freeze-drying or taxidermy of a cat will cost several times that, so ask practitioners for euro prices for both full and partial work before you decide.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[4] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[5] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, small to medium dog | £2,500–£6,000[6] | United Kingdom |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[7] | United States |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[8] | United States |

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Catalonia
Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in Catalonia apply.
In Spain, a small number of taxidermistas take pets, some offering freeze-drying (liofilización). Summer heat across much of the country makes freezing within hours essential. Protected native species are tightly regulated; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Ask for a written price in euros and an estimated return date before sending your pet.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Stop the clock. Warmth is the enemy here; the first thing to do is get your pet down onto the coolest hard floor you have.
- Call ahead to your vet or an emergency clinic if you don't have freezer space, and ask them to hold your pet frozen rather than refrigerated.
- Set aside the collar, tags and a favorite blanket. Leave the fur alone for now; if you'd like a clipped lock, ask the practitioner where to take it from.
- Bag and freeze your pet inside a few hours, sealed in two layers and posed as if simply lying down.
- Decide on the method: preserving the whole pet by freeze-drying, conventional taxidermy, or keeping just one part and cremating the remainder.
- Agree everything in writing, including what happens if damage is found when your pet thaws.
Other ways to keep your pet close
Clip a small lock of fur and take a paw print before your pet leaves home, but ask the practitioner first if you're sending the whole pet, because they may prefer the fur left untouched. For a partial piece or cremation, go ahead. A lock of fur tied with ribbon costs nothing and is often the keepsake people treasure most.

Questions people ask
Can I ship my pet from Catalonia to a practitioner elsewhere?
Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.
How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Catalonia?
Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
Is there a pet taxidermist in Catalonia?
There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Catalonia mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.
What should I do first if my pet dies in Catalonia and I might want them preserved?
Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.
Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Catalonia before sending my pet?
Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.
How long does pet preservation take for families in Catalonia?
Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[10], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[8]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.
