Preserving your pet from Alicante: the first hours and beyond

Alicante, Valencia

Where Alicante owners find freezer space and practitioners

If you live in Alicante far from family, perhaps having moved here for retirement or work, losing a pet can feel especially lonely. Your pet may have been your daily companion through a big change of life. Talk to friends or neighbours who knew them, keep up small routines, and give yourself time. Local expat groups, clubs and neighbours often understand this kind of loss better than you might expect, so don't hesitate to lean on them.

A farewell for a pet in Alicante can be simple: a few minutes together at home, family gathered on the terrace with flowers, or attending the cremation if you want to. Some people prefer to receive the ashes later and hold a small memorial then. Tell us what feels right when you write to us, and we'll email you options.

In a city the size of Alicante, your vet may know of someone who preserves pets, or may never have been asked. Either answer is normal. Ask them to freeze your pet rather than send them for cremation, then do your own research on practitioners. Many work from small home studios and take pets from all over the country, so local reputation matters less than their portfolio.

Alicante is home to about 334,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Valencia communities we cover.

Our pages for Murcia (43 miles) and Valencia (78 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Alicante as well.

50.11%[1]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

Freeze-drying a pet typically costs USD 1,000–2,000.

3–6 months (small pets)[3]

Freeze-dry preservation takes 3–6 months for small pets, 7+ months for large dogs and up to a year for very large animals.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Spain

About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain choose cremation. Attitudes are shifting, and that openness extends to pets, where families increasingly want something personal rather than the standard option. Preservation is the most personal of all, and still unusual. Expect to explain what you want to your vet more than once, and to find the practitioner yourself.

Source for the Spain number: Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Alicante, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

How Alicante weather changes your timeline

Whatever the weather in Alicante, a freezer is the only safe place to hold a pet for preservation. Fridges, cool rooms and outdoor spaces all let the body keep changing. If you don't have space at home, ask your vet, an emergency clinic or a friend with a chest freezer to hold your pet for a few days.

Published prices and waits for Alicante owners

Ask whether a European practitioner's price includes VAT and a base or case, and whether there's a charge for animal by-product paperwork if your pet crosses a border. Our preservation cost estimator is built on US and UK price lists, so use its result for scale rather than as a local figure.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Valencia: Valencia costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Valencia

Before you commit to preservation, check two things with the practitioner: whether your species needs any permit where they are, and whether they're allowed to receive it. Rules for domestic cats and dogs are light; rules for native birds and reptiles can be strict and vary by place. If the rest of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, check what Valencia allows for home burial and scattering too.

In Spain, a small number of taxidermistas take pets, some offering freeze-drying (liofilización). Summer heat across much of the country makes freezing within hours essential. Protected native species are tightly regulated; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Ask for a written price in euros and an estimated return date before sending your pet.

What to do first if you might preserve your pet

  1. Check how warm the room is first. Turn on the air conditioning or carry your pet to the coolest tiled or concrete floor in the house.
  2. Use what you have tonight. An emptied kitchen freezer shelf, or bagged ice in a cooler with a towel laid over it, keeps a small pet until morning.
  3. Leave the coat dry. Paper towel around the mouth and rear is all you need; soaked fur turns into frozen clumps that make the practitioner's job harder.
  4. Write down when you found your pet and the time they were put in the cold; a best guess is fine if you aren't sure.
  5. Phone your vet when they open if your pet won't fit in your freezer, and be clear that a preservation specialist will be taking them.
  6. Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, telling them what kind of animal, how heavy, and attaching a current photo.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

Grief often returns in waves, prompted by a familiar sound or an empty spot in the sun. Marking the anniversary, looking through photos or planting something on the terrace can help. If sadness is still heavy after several weeks, your vet, a counsellor or an online pet loss group can offer support, and many groups work in English as well as Spanish.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Alicante?

Usually yes. Murcia is about 43 miles away and Valencia is about 78 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Alicante page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can I keep my pet's skull or skeleton instead of a full preservation?

Yes. Some practitioners clean and whiten a skull, and a few articulate full skeletons, especially for birds, reptiles and small mammals. It's a quieter keepsake than a lifelike piece and suits people who like the idea of keeping something real but find fur and glass eyes unsettling. Ask about the method used, the wait and whether the remaining body can go for cremation.

Is it worth driving my pet to a practitioner instead of shipping?

If the drive is manageable, it removes the worry about a delayed parcel, and you get to meet the practitioner and see their work. Pack your pet frozen in a cooler with dry ice or plenty of bagged ice, keep the car cool and go straight there. For a long distance, overnight shipping early in the week is usually safer than a multi-day drive.

Can a pet still be preserved after a post-mortem?

Usually not as a whole-body piece, because a post-mortem (necropsy) involves incisions and removing tissue. A smaller piece, like a paw, the tail or feathers, may still be possible if those areas weren't affected. If you want both answers about how your pet died and a preserved piece, talk to your vet and a practitioner before the examination, not after.

Should I tell my vet about preservation before a planned euthanasia?

Yes, ideally when you book. The clinic can then plan to put your pet in a freezer rather than add them to the crematory collection, clip only a small patch of fur for the injection and give you a quiet room with time afterward to settle your pet into a natural shape. If you've already chosen a practitioner, ask them whether they have any requests for the vet, and pass them on.
