Pet Preservation in Sweden
Pet preservation is a small craft with few practitioners, so most owners in Sweden don't have one down the road. That's fine. A pet frozen quickly and kept frozen can travel, and can wait while you choose.
- Freeze-drying, taxidermy or a partial keepsake

Pet Preservation in Sweden: what to know
Prices for pet preservation in Sweden depend more on the pet than on the place. Size, species, pose and method drive the quote, and delivery can add a meaningful amount where distances are long. Where we've found published prices, we show them; where we haven't, we say so and give overseas figures for scale.
Pet preservation in Sweden is a small specialty. Most practitioners are one- or two-person studios, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife. Families usually choose from a national shortlist by the quality of their pet work, then get their pet to the studio frozen, by courier, overnight shipping or a single drive.

Aftercare traditions in Sweden, and choosing to preserve
With about 84.69%[1] of people in Sweden choosing cremation, most friends and relatives will assume your pet's ashes are coming home. A preserved pet can surprise people. It helps to have a simple sentence ready, such as that you wanted to keep them as they were. Nobody needs more than that, and most people understand once they see how much care went into it.
That Sweden rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What pet preservation costs in Sweden
Across Europe, pet preservation specialists are few, and many taxidermists work mainly with wildlife and hunting trophies. Ask a practitioner how many pets of your species they've finished, and what they charge by weight. Moving a pet's body between countries falls under animal by-product rules, so check paperwork before sending anything across a border.
Traditional taxidermy tends to cost more than freeze-drying for dogs. One UK studio charges £2,500–£6,000[2] for a small to medium dog, which gives you a sense of the effort involved. Whatever the method, add delivery, a base or case and any touch-ups to the headline price before comparing quotes.
| Pet and method | Published price | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze-dried cat or small dog | £800–£1,500[3] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, standard domestic cat | from £2,300[4] | United Kingdom |
| Taxidermy, small to medium dog | £2,500–£6,000[2] | United Kingdom |
| Freeze-drying, typical quote | USD 1,000–2,000[5] | United States |
| Typical wait, either method | 6–12 months[6] | United States |

What Sweden rules mean for a preserved pet
Two kinds of rules can apply to a preserved pet. Wildlife rules come first: if your pet is a native wild bird, turtle, snake or other protected species, possessing or preserving them may need paperwork, even if you kept them legally for years. Then there are the ordinary aftercare rules on burial at home and scattering ashes, for any part of your pet you don't keep.
In Sweden, a few preparators (konservatorer) accept pets alongside wildlife. Many wild species are protected and need reporting or permits; domestic cats, dogs and rabbits usually don't. Long distances mean many families send their pet frozen by courier. Ask your vet to freeze your pet while you look, since clinics usually arrange cremation by default.
What to do first if you might preserve your pet
- Take a breath. If your pet was frozen quickly, you have time. If they weren't, freeze them now anyway and ask a practitioner honestly.
- Describe exactly what happened when you reach out: the time of death, the gap before your pet was frozen, and how warm the room was.
- Choose the pose with the practitioner. Closed-eye sleeping poses usually look the most natural.
- Send reference photos, including the face in good light and anything distinctive about how your pet sat or lay.
- Pay only the agreed deposit, and keep the written quote, return date and refund terms somewhere safe.
- Prepare a spot at home away from sun, damp and heating vents, so your pet has somewhere safe to come back to.
Other ways to keep your pet close
If cost is what makes you hesitate, you're weighing something real. By our estimate, freeze-drying a cat-sized pet costs roughly ten times a private cremation[7]. Smaller keepsakes close that gap: one US provider lists paw prints and fur clippings at $49–$133[8], depending on framing. Our memorial budget planner helps you set a ceiling before you ask anyone for a quote.

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in Sweden?
Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.
What if nobody in Sweden preserves pets?
Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.
Are preservation prices in Sweden different from US price lists?
Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.
How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Sweden?
Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.
Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Sweden before sending my pet?
Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.
Does it matter which vet in Sweden my pet is with when they die?
Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.
