What pet preservation is like in Malmo
Long, dark Swedish winters can make grief feel heavier, especially when a pet was part of your daily routine indoors. Lighting a candle, a familiar Swedish way of remembering, can give grief a place. When the heaviness lasts for weeks, a vet, a counsellor or an online group for pet loss can help. Losing an animal is a genuine loss, and asking for support is sensible.
Malmö is an international city, and many residents live far from family, having moved here from other parts of Sweden, from Denmark across the bridge, or from much further away. Losing a pet can feel very isolating in that situation. Talk to someone who knew your pet, keep a gentle routine, and spend time somewhere calm, like the seafront in the evening light.
If your vet in Malmo can't hold your pet frozen, a larger centre such as Malmo may have an emergency hospital with more freezer space. Call before you drive. Carry your pet wrapped in a cooler with ice packs or bagged ice, keep the car cool and go straight there, because every warm hour matters for the fur.

Why preservation means speaking up early in Sweden
In Sweden, where cremation covers about 84.69%[1] of deaths, many families already keep ashes at home in an urn on a shelf. A preserved pet is a bigger step along the same line, keeping your companion close in physical form. Framing it that way can help relatives who find the idea strange. And if some of your pet goes to the crematory, the urn and the preserved piece can sit side by side.
The Sweden percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Malmo, not as a count of pets.
Seasons, shipping and humidity in Malmo
Whatever the weather in Malmo, a freezer is the only safe place to hold a pet for preservation. Fridges, cool rooms and outdoor spaces all let the body keep changing. If you don't have space at home, ask your vet, an emergency clinic or a friend with a chest freezer to hold your pet for a few days.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for continental Europe, so the table below shows the closest honest reference: UK and US price lists. In the UK, one guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about £800–£1,500[5], and US guides give $1,000–$2,500[6]. European practitioners set their own prices in euros, so ask for a written quote.

When the rules in Skane come into play
One practical rule matters more than any statute: a pet who has had a post-mortem examination (a necropsy) usually can't be preserved whole, because of the incisions involved. If your vet, insurer or breeder asks for one, decide first which matters more to you, the answers or the body. Otherwise, domestic pets face few legal limits, and the notes below for Skane cover anything you don't keep.
In Sweden, a few preparators (konservatorer) accept pets alongside wildlife. Many wild species are protected and need reporting or permits; domestic cats, dogs and rabbits usually don't. Long distances mean many families send their pet frozen by courier. Ask your vet to freeze your pet while you look, since clinics usually arrange cremation by default.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Tell your vet or clinic straight away that you're considering preservation, so your pet isn't sent for cremation with the day's collection.
- Lay your pet in a relaxed position on their side, legs gently folded, before the body stiffens. Don't wash or brush them.
- Double-bag them in heavy plastic bags, pressing out as much air as you can, and seal each bag.
- Put them in the coldest freezer available inside a few hours; a refrigerator isn't cold enough. Once they're in, resist the urge to open the bags and check.
- Take photos you already have and gather more: their face from several angles, how their ears sat, any markings. The practitioner will need them.
- Choose a practitioner by their pet work, then make sure cost, deposit, return date and how they'll travel are written down before your pet leaves the house.
Remembering your pet while you wait
A farewell for a pet in Malmö is usually quiet and personal: a few minutes together at home, a candle and a photo, or attending the cremation if you'd like to. Some families hold a small gathering later when the ashes return. When you contact us, tell us what feels right, and we'll send you options by email. Some people also keep a collar, a feather or a clipping of fur as a small keepsake.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Sweden?
For people, yes: about 84.69%[1] of Sweden deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Malmo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can my vet in Malmo freeze my pet for me?
Many vets can hold a pet frozen for a few days, but you have to ask, because the usual routine is to send deceased pets for cremation. Tell the clinic as soon as possible that you're considering preservation, ask them to freeze rather than refrigerate, and ask them to note it on the paperwork. Check how long they can keep your pet and when you need to collect.
Will my preserved pet look like they did when alive?
They'll look like your pet at rest, not like a living animal. Fur, markings and body shape usually come through well. Faces are harder: noses can darken, lips and eyelids shrink slightly, and open eyes are usually glass. Closed-eye sleeping poses tend to look most natural, and lots of reference photos help the practitioner capture what made your pet recognizable.
What if my family doesn't want a preserved pet at home?
It's common for one person to love the idea while another finds it upsetting. Freezing your pet buys time to talk it over. Many families settle on a middle path: a preserved paw or a few feathers kept in one person's room, a paw cast, or cremation with a lock of fur. Decide together where any piece would be kept and who has to see it.
Is there a pet taxidermist in Malmo?
Possibly, but pet specialists are rare everywhere, so don't assume the closest taxidermist is the right one. Many mount game animals and see few pets. Most families choose a practitioner by the quality of their finished cats, dogs or birds, then ship their pet frozen overnight or drive it there. Tell us your pet's species and weight, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from Malmo.
Does the euthanasia injection affect preservation?
Generally, no. Practitioners routinely work on pets who were put to sleep. What matters far more is what happens next: how much fur was clipped, whether your pet was kept cool and how soon they were frozen. Mention any shaved patches or bandaged areas when you describe your pet, so the practitioner knows what to expect when your pet thaws.
