Pet Preservation in Bangkok

Pet preservation is a small craft with few practitioners, so most owners in Bangkok don't have one down the road. That's fine. A pet frozen quickly and kept frozen can travel, and can wait while you choose.

  • Freeze-drying, taxidermy or a partial keepsake
  • Honest about waits and results
  • Written quotes you can compare

Pet Preservation in Bangkok: what to know

If you're in Bangkok and your pet has just died, the only urgent task is freezing. Tell your vet you're considering preservation, ask them to freeze rather than refrigerate and keep your pet out of the day's cremation collection. The method, the practitioner, the pose and the price can all be decided over the next few weeks.

Nobody in Bangkok should feel rushed into preservation. Clinics, crematories and even kind relatives may press for a quick decision, usually for good reasons of their own. A frozen pet takes that pressure away. You can take a week, compare written quotes, look at partial keepsakes and talk it through at home before committing.

How Bangkok thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits

Because around 80.0%[1] of people in Bangkok are cremated, aftercare providers here are organised around cremation, and preservation specialists are few by comparison. That's a reason to plan the handover carefully if you combine the two. Agree in writing who takes your pet first, who removes any part being preserved, and that the cremation of the rest is private so the ashes you get back are your pet's.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Bangkok rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Bangkok

Pet preservation specialists are rare across most of Asia, and shipping a pet's body abroad for the work usually involves export and import permits. For many families, that makes a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur, a paw print or a small preserved piece done locally, a more realistic option than full-body work.

We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for this region, so the table below shows UK and US price lists for reference only. Freeze-drying a cat or small dog is typically quoted at USD 1,000–2,000[2] in the US, according to one industry report. Local practitioners, where they exist, set their own prices, so ask for a written quote in local currency.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Bangkok

If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for Bangkok below covers the rest.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Check how warm the room is first. Switch the air conditioning on, or move your pet to whichever concrete or tiled floor in the house stays coldest.
  2. Use what you have tonight. A cleared kitchen freezer, or a cooler of bagged ice under a towel, will hold a small pet until morning.
  3. Leave the coat dry. Blot the mouth and rear with paper towel only; wet fur freezes into clumps that are harder to work with.
  4. Write down when you found your pet and when they went into the cold, even if you have to estimate.
  5. Phone your vet when they open if your pet won't fit in your freezer, and be clear that a preservation specialist will be taking them.
  6. Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, telling them what kind of animal, how heavy, and attaching a current photo.

Living with a preserved pet in Bangkok

A glass dome or case is worth considering for any preserved pet. It keeps dust, insects and curious hands off delicate work, evens out humidity and makes the piece feel intentional rather than just placed on a chair. Ask your practitioner for the case dimensions they'd recommend, and budget for it alongside the preservation itself.

Questions people ask

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Bangkok?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

Does it matter which vet in Bangkok my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

What if nobody in Bangkok preserves pets?

Consider a partial keepsake, such as a lock of fur set in a frame, a paw print or cast made at home, or cremation paired with a small keepsake. If a practitioner elsewhere will take your pet, ask about the paperwork for moving an animal's body across borders before you plan anything.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Bangkok?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Bangkok, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

Can I ship my pet from Bangkok to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.

Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Bangkok before sending my pet?

Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.
