Arranging preservation from Sheffield: the practical side
Sheffield's pubs, allotments and community groups make it a city where people tend to know one another, and a pet's death is often noticed by more people than you might think. Letting them share memories can help. If you would like a marked moment, a simple scattering, a reading at home or a planted rose can serve as a small funeral. Grief can surface months later, and that is normal.
Sheffield's student population and young professionals mean many people live away from family, and for some a pet was the main company in a shared house or a first flat. If the loss leaves you lonely, reach out to friends, family back home or a pet bereavement support line, which you can call or message. Talking about your pet and the life you shared helps more than keeping it to yourself.
One advantage of a big city is that you can often meet a practitioner in person, or at least find one within a day's drive. Some families in Sheffield prefer to drop their pet off frozen in a cooler rather than ship, because it removes the worry about a delayed parcel. Either way, ask to see finished pets of your species in daylight before you hand anyone a deposit.

Our estimate
175,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Sheffield
How we calculated this
584,000 ÷ 2.4 = 243,333 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 175,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
14,500
Sheffield families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
175,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 14,500 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation
Where cremation is as common as it is in England, at about 83.0%[5], a preservation request can surprise the clinic desk. Staff may gently check that you understand the cost and the wait. That's care, not judgment. Give a short, firm answer, such as asking for your pet to be frozen for a preservation specialist, and ask them to write it on the file so the next shift doesn't route your pet to the crematory out of habit.
The England figure comes from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Keeping your pet frozen through Sheffield's weather
Without local climate records for Sheffield, plan around the practical risks instead. How reliable is the power? Where is the nearest place selling dry ice? Could a neighbor hold your pet if your freezer failed? Answering those three questions before you need to is the most useful weather planning you can do.

How much to budget for preservation
UK studios usually take a deposit when your pet arrives and the balance before the finished piece is returned. Ask whether the price includes VAT, a base or a glass dome, and what they charge to store a finished pet if you can't collect straight away. Our preservation cost estimator gives a rough starting figure, not a quote.
We keep the detailed England price table on one page so it stays current: see England prices.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in England
If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for England below covers the rest.
In the UK, pet preservation specialists are few, and families often choose from a national shortlist and arrange a courier or drive. Most native wild birds are protected, and selling or commercially displaying some species needs a certificate, so tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is. A domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. Ask your vet to freeze your pet, not send them for cremation, while you decide.
The rules that apply across England (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our England page. Sheffield may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do now, and what can wait
- Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment, not afterward, so the clinic can plan where your pet will be held once they've died.
- Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible when placing the catheter or giving the injection, and find out which leg they intend to use.
- Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so there's no delay between the appointment and a freezer, whether that's at home or at the clinic.
- Take your time saying goodbye, and afterward, while your pet is still soft, arrange them into the sleeping or curled position you want.
- If you've already picked a practitioner, ask them beforehand how they want your pet bagged and shaped for freezing.
- Note the time of death and the time of freezing on your phone. Every practitioner will ask for both.
Living with a preserved pet in Sheffield
Sheffield has a reputation as a friendly city, and many people find that telling neighbors and friends about a pet's death brings real kindness. Before collection, you might gather the people who knew your pet in the front room for a few minutes, share a story or two and say goodbye together. If you would like something more formal, ask whether the crematorium has a room where a short service can be held.

Questions people ask
How do England attitudes to cremation compare?
Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) puts the England human cremation rate at about 83.0%[5]. We show it on the Sheffield page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is Sheffield big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 175,000 Sheffield households keep a dog or cat and around 14,500 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 584,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Sheffield?
Usually yes. Leeds is about 29 miles away, Nottingham is about 32 miles away and Manchester is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many families in Sheffield choose pet preservation?
Very few. By our estimate, about 175,000 households in Sheffield have a dog or cat, and around 14,500 dogs and cats die there each year. One market report suggests about 7%[7] of pet owners choose taxidermy, and freeze-drying is the bigger share of the work. Most families who ask about preservation end up with a mix of options.
Can I put my pet in the kitchen freezer?
Yes, if they fit and the freezer runs cold, as long as they're sealed in two heavy bags and kept apart from food in a box or bin. Small pets such as hamsters, rats, budgies and kittens fit easily. For a cat or dog, a chest freezer is usually easier. Avoid a fridge for anything longer than a few hours.
What if the power goes out while my pet is in the freezer?
Keep the freezer shut and cover it with blankets for insulation. US food-safety guidance says a full freezer holds its temperature for about two days and a half-full one about a day, if the door stays closed. If the outage will run longer, buy dry ice, handle it with gloves and place it on top, or move your pet to a freezer that has power.
