Pet Preservation in the United Kingdom: what to know

Prices for pet preservation in the United Kingdom depend more on the pet than on the place. Size, species, pose and method drive the quote, and delivery can add a meaningful amount where distances are long. Where we've found published prices, we show them; where we haven't, we say so and give overseas figures for scale.

In the United Kingdom, as in most places, vets and emergency clinics are set up for cremation, so preservation needs a clear request. Tell them early you want your pet frozen and held, not collected. Rules mostly concern wild and native species; domestic pets are usually straightforward. Moving a pet's body across a border is the exception, and usually needs paperwork.

We cover 40 communities in the United Kingdom, from London, Birmingham and Leeds to smaller towns.

Our estimate

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 40 communities in the United Kingdom on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

What local cremation habits mean for your request

In the United Kingdom, where cremation covers about 83.0%[1] of deaths, many families already keep ashes at home in an urn on a shelf. A preserved pet is a bigger step along the same line, keeping your companion close in physical form. Framing it that way can help relatives who find the idea strange. And if some of your pet goes to the crematory, the urn and the preserved piece can sit side by side.

The cremation figure for the United Kingdom comes from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Published prices and waits for the United Kingdom owners

UK studios usually take a deposit when your pet arrives and the balance before the finished piece is returned. Ask whether the price includes VAT, a base or a glass dome, and what they charge to store a finished pet if you can't collect straight away. Our preservation cost estimator gives a rough starting figure, not a quote.

For comparison, the Competition and Markets Authority's review of vet cremation pricing found large vet groups' median individual cremation price for dogs averaged about GBP 249.47[2]. Freeze-drying a cat, at £800–£1,500[3] in one UK guide, is several times that. Many UK families keep the gap smaller by preserving a paw and choosing individual cremation for the rest.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in the United Kingdom

One practical rule matters more than any statute: a pet who has had a post-mortem examination (a necropsy) usually can't be preserved whole, because of the incisions involved. If your vet, insurer or breeder asks for one, decide first which matters more to you, the answers or the body. Otherwise, domestic pets face few legal limits, and the notes below for the United Kingdom cover anything you don't keep.

In the UK, pet preservation specialists are few, and families often choose from a national shortlist and arrange a courier or drive. Most native wild birds are protected, and selling or commercially displaying some species needs a certificate, so tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is. A domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. Ask your vet to freeze your pet, not send them for cremation, while you decide.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Don't rush into a decision, rush into a freezer. Which method and which practitioner are questions that can wait.
  2. Keep your pet away from warmth: no soft bedding, no sunny window, no car.
  3. Wrap them in two heavy bags, air pressed out, and freeze within hours.
  4. Talk with the people you live with about which room the finished piece would go in and who'd be looking at it daily.
  5. Look at finished pets of your species by each practitioner; untouched photos in natural light tell you most.
  6. Ask for a written quote covering base, chosen pose, shipping there and back, and later touch-ups.
  7. Expect a long wait, and think about how to honor your pet in the meantime; a small memorial at home is one way.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

A glass dome or case is worth considering for any preserved pet. It keeps dust, insects and curious hands off delicate work, evens out humidity and makes the piece feel intentional rather than just placed on a chair. Ask your practitioner for the case dimensions they'd recommend, and budget for it alongside the preservation itself.

Questions people ask

How many communities do you cover in the United Kingdom?

We have local pet preservation pages for 40 communities in the United Kingdom, including London, Birmingham and Leeds. Each one covers how to freeze and hold your pet there, what the local weather means for the first hours, shipping to a practitioner, and published prices.

How many families in the United Kingdom could face this decision?

By our estimate, the 40 communities we cover in the United Kingdom are home to about 6,015,000 households with a dog or cat. Only a small share ever consider preservation, which is why so few practitioners exist and why most families send their pet some distance to the right one.

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in the United Kingdom?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in the United Kingdom?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of the United Kingdom, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.

Do I need a permit to preserve my pet in the United Kingdom?

Not for a domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot, in most places. Permits mainly apply to native wild birds, turtles and other protected species, which can be restricted even if you kept them legally. Tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is before you ship, and ask which rules apply.

How long does pet preservation take for families in the United Kingdom?

Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[9]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.
