Pet Preservation in Wales: what to know

Each local page for Wales explains how to freeze and hold your pet in that community, what to say to a local vet or emergency clinic, and how shipping or driving to a distant practitioner usually works. None of them list or rank businesses; when you're ready, we'll email practitioners who take your pet's species and size.

Rules in Wales rarely affect a domestic cat or dog, but they can matter for native wild birds, turtles and other protected species. Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to control wildlife trade. If your pet is anything unusual, tell the practitioner the species and where they came from before you ship, and ask which permits apply.

Our estimate

220,000

Estimated pet-owning households across the communities we cover in Wales

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 2 communities in Wales on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

What local cremation habits mean for your request

In Wales, about 80.46%[1] of people are cremated, so cremation is the default most families expect, for people and pets alike. That's why vets and emergency clinics tend to route deceased pets straight to a crematory. If you want to preserve your pet, you're choosing the less usual path here, so be clear and early: tell the clinic you want your pet frozen and held, not collected for cremation.

The cremation figure for Wales comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, Progress of Cremation 1885-2025 (2025). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Wales

UK prices for pet preservation are set by each practitioner and depend mostly on your pet's size and the method. One UK freeze-drying guide puts cats and small dogs at £800–£1,500[2], hamsters and birds at £300 to £500 and large dogs at £3,000 or more[2]. Always ask for a written quote in pounds that includes the base and any delivery.

UK studios usually take a deposit when your pet arrives and the balance before the finished piece is returned. Ask whether the price includes VAT, a base or a glass dome, and what they charge to store a finished pet if you can't collect straight away. Our preservation cost estimator gives a rough starting figure, not a quote.

When the rules in Wales come into play

Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in Wales apply.

In the UK, pet preservation specialists are few, and families often choose from a national shortlist and arrange a courier or drive. Most native wild birds are protected, and selling or commercially displaying some species needs a certificate, so tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is. A domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. Ask your vet to freeze your pet, not send them for cremation, while you decide.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Don't rush into a decision, rush into a freezer. Which method and which practitioner are questions that can wait.
  2. Keep your pet away from warmth: no soft bedding, no sunny window, no car.
  3. Wrap them in two heavy bags, squeeze out the air, and get them frozen inside hours.
  4. Talk with the people you live with about where a preserved pet would live and who would see it every day.
  5. Look at finished pets of your species by each practitioner; untouched photos in natural light tell you most.
  6. Ask for a written quote including base, pose, delivery both ways and any touch-ups.
  7. Expect a long wait and plan how you'll mark those months, for example with a small memorial at home.

Remembering your pet while you wait

A glass dome or case is worth considering for any preserved pet. It keeps dust, insects and curious hands off delicate work, evens out humidity and makes the piece feel intentional rather than just placed on a chair. Ask your practitioner for the case dimensions they'd recommend, and budget for it alongside the preservation itself.

Questions people ask

Is there a pet taxidermist in Wales?

There may be a few, but pet specialists are rare, and many taxidermists in Wales mainly mount game. Choose by the quality of finished pets of your species, then plan how to get your pet there frozen. Tell us your species, weight and city, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from your area.

Can I visit a practitioner's studio from Wales before sending my pet?

Many practitioners welcome a visit or a video call, and seeing finished pets in person is the surest way to judge their work. Ask to see animals of your pet's species and size, including older pieces. If the studio is too far to visit, ask for unedited daylight photos and a live video walk-through before you pay a deposit.

Can I ship my pet from Wales to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.

How do I keep a preserved pet in good condition in Wales?

Keep it out of direct sun, away from damp rooms and heating vents, and check it now and then for moths or carpet beetles. Dust gently with a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. In humid months, a dehumidifier or a sealed glass case helps protect freeze-dried work.

How long does pet preservation take for families in Wales?

Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[7], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[8]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in Wales?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of Wales, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.
