Permits, shipping and burial rules in England
Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for England apply to that part.
In the UK, pet preservation specialists are few, and families often choose from a national shortlist and arrange a courier or drive. Most native wild birds are protected, and selling or commercially displaying some species needs a certificate, so tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is. A domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. Ask your vet to freeze your pet, not send them for cremation, while you decide.

Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Freeze first, decide later. A pet frozen quickly and kept frozen can wait weeks while you choose.
- Blot, don't wash. Pat away any fluid with a paper towel and leave the fur dry.
- Pose gently and bag tightly. Curl them as if asleep, then seal them in two thick bags, squeezing out the air so the face and ears don't get freezer burn.
- Plan for a power cut. Work out now where dry ice or a spare freezer could come from, in case the power stayed off longer than a day.
- Ask two or three practitioners if they accept an animal of your pet's kind and weight, what their current wait looks like, and how they prefer to receive pets.
- Ship or drop off frozen; if it's going by courier, send it at the start of the week and request a message as soon as it's in their hands.
Remembering your pet while you wait
If you have children, London schools and neighbors will often notice when a family pet is suddenly missing from daily life, and questions can come from all sides. Be honest with children in simple words, avoid saying the pet went to sleep, and give them a small role in the farewell, such as drawing a picture or choosing a spot for a memorial plant. Not necessarily, because most pet preservers take work from all over the country, so their queues depend on reputation more than location. A studio near London might be booked for months, while one several states away could start sooner. Ask each one when your pet would actually go into the chamber, not just when they'll receive them.
How do I look after a preserved pet at home?
Protect it from sunlight, damp and insects. Direct sun fades fur, humid air can soften freeze-dried tissue and moths or carpet beetles can damage fur over time.
