Finding a practitioner from Belfast
Grief often comes back unexpectedly: a collar or a food bowl in the cupboard, a familiar sound at the door. Marking the anniversary, planting something in the garden or writing down memories can help. If sadness stays heavy for weeks, a pet bereavement support line, your vet or a counsellor can help, and asking for help is a normal thing to do.
Belfast people are known for their warmth, but pet loss can still feel lonely when friends or colleagues don't quite understand. Grief for an animal is real, and it's normal for the house to feel very quiet for a while. Talk to someone who knew your pet, spend time somewhere you shared, and let yourself take things slowly. There's no set timetable for feeling better.
If your vet in Belfast can't hold your pet frozen, a larger centre such as Belfast may have an emergency hospital with more freezer space. Call before you drive. Carry your pet wrapped in a cooler with ice packs or bagged ice, keep the car cool and go straight there, because every warm hour matters for the fur.
Belfast's population is around 343,000.
Belfast sits within easy reach of Glasgow (110 miles), Edinburgh (143 miles) and Liverpool (145 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Belfast; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
105,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Belfast
How we calculated this
343,000 ÷ 2.4 = 142,917 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 105,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
8,400
Estimated dog and cat losses in Belfast each year
How we calculated this
105,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 8,400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation
Cremation is relatively rare in Northern Ireland, at about 24.2%[5], so pet crematories may be fewer and further apart than in many places. That can help you: vets here are less likely to send your pet off on an automatic collection. Still, ask clearly for freezing rather than cold storage, because a clinic used to burial handovers may only have a fridge.
We take the Northern Ireland rate from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Belfast, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seasons, shipping and humidity in Belfast
We don't have weather averages for Belfast, so here's a rough rule for anywhere: if you'd be comfortable indoors in a T-shirt, your pet should be frozen within a few hours. If you'd want a sweater, you have a little longer, but still aim for the same day.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
UK studios usually take a deposit when your pet arrives and the balance before the finished piece is returned. Ask whether the price includes VAT, a base or a glass dome, and what they charge to store a finished pet if you can't collect straight away. Our preservation cost estimator gives a rough starting figure, not a quote.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Northern Ireland: Northern Ireland costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

When the rules in Northern Ireland come into play
Most of the paperwork you'll sign for preservation is a contract, not a permit. Read what it says about the deposit, storage fees if you can't collect on time, and what happens to your pet if the studio closes or the practitioner falls ill. Keep a copy with your pet's photos. For whatever won't be kept, the rules for Northern Ireland below apply.
For what Belfast itself says, see Belfast City Council. Its pages cover municipal collection; a private cremation is arranged separately.
In the UK, pet preservation specialists are few, and families often choose from a national shortlist and arrange a courier or drive. Most native wild birds are protected, and selling or commercially displaying some species needs a certificate, so tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is. A domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. Ask your vet to freeze your pet, not send them for cremation, while you decide.
Start with the Northern Ireland rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Belfast's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do now, and what can wait
- Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic wherever you are, and ask whether they can freeze your pet today.
- Ask how long they could hold your pet, and find out if they'd release your pet to a courier or practitioner straight from their premises.
- If you have to drive home, buy a hard-sided cooler and dry ice, or failing that a generous load of bagged ice, with your pet sealed in two bags beneath a towel.
- Check the ice every few hours during the drive, and don't leave the cooler behind in a car sitting in the sun.
- Keep the clinic's paperwork showing the date, your pet's weight and what they died of; the practitioner will ask to see it.
- Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and take their advice on whether your pet should travel from the clinic or from home.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Belfast each year?
Our estimate is around 8,400. It comes from Belfast's population (about 343,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 105,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How do Northern Ireland attitudes to cremation compare?
Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) puts the Northern Ireland human cremation rate at about 24.2%[5]. We show it on the Belfast page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Belfast?
Usually yes. Glasgow is about 110 miles away, Edinburgh is about 143 miles away and Liverpool is about 145 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I put my pet in the kitchen freezer?
Yes, if they fit and the freezer runs cold, as long as they're sealed in two heavy bags and kept apart from food in a box or bin. Small pets such as hamsters, rats, budgies and kittens fit easily. For a cat or dog, a chest freezer is usually easier. Avoid a fridge for anything longer than a few hours.
How many pets die in Belfast each year, and how many are preserved?
Our estimate for Belfast is roughly 8,400 dog and cat deaths a year, across about 105,000 homes with a dog or cat. Just a small fraction are preserved; one market report puts taxidermy at about 7%[7] of owners' choices, and many families end up with a partial keepsake instead. You won't be the first to ask, but your vet may not have been asked before.
How do I look after a preserved pet at home?
Protect it from sunlight, damp and insects. Direct sun fades fur, humid air can soften freeze-dried tissue and moths or carpet beetles can damage fur over time. Keep the piece in a dry room away from bathrooms and heating vents, dust it with a soft makeup brush or a hair dryer on cool, and never wash it. A glass case helps with all three.
