North Miami Beach, Florida
Preserving a pet from North Miami Beach: the local picture
Children in North Miami Beach may learn that a pet has died in English, Spanish, Haitian Creole or another language at home. Whichever you use, keep the words simple and truthful and welcome their questions. Children can join in by drawing, picking a flower or placing a favorite photo beside the urn. Children's books about losing a pet, including some in Spanish, can support the talk.
In a busy, crowded part of Miami-Dade, grief for a pet can be easy to push aside while work and traffic carry on. Take time to acknowledge it, perhaps with a candle on the windowsill for a night. If sadness lasts for weeks, or affects sleep, appetite or work, talking to a counselor or calling a pet bereavement line is a sensible step.
Working dogs around North Miami Beach, such as a herding dog or a livestock guardian, can be big. A large dog won't fit into a small chest freezer once stiff, so settle them on one side with legs folded into a shape that fits before stiffness sets in. Big dogs also cost more and take longer, so ask practitioners to quote for a partial piece as well.
About 46,236 people live in North Miami Beach, which makes it the 68th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Hialeah, about 9 miles (14 km) away, which is where some providers serving North Miami Beach are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at North Miami (2 miles), Sunny Isles Beach (3 miles) and Aventura (3 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How Florida thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits
Where cremation is as common as it is in Florida, at about 72.5%[5], a preservation request can surprise the clinic desk. Staff may gently check that you understand the cost and the wait. That's care, not judgment. Give a short, firm answer, such as asking for your pet to be frozen for a preservation specialist, and ask them to write it on the file so the next shift doesn't route your pet to the crematory out of habit.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for North Miami Beach only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How North Miami Beach weather changes your timeline
In August, when North Miami Beach highs sit near 91°F, even the walk from the car to the clinic door warms a pet's body. Carry them in a cooler rather than in your arms, park in shade and keep the air conditioning running. A pet who died of heatstroke is already very hot inside, so press ice packs against the belly and chest to cool them quickly before freezing.
With May, June, July, August, September and October running hot in North Miami Beach, the window between death and damage is short. Don't lay your pet on a soft bed or carpet, which holds heat against the body, and don't leave them in a car, even briefly. If you have to transport them to a clinic freezer, pack them in a cooler with bagged ice under a towel and run the air conditioning.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from North Miami Beach
The simplest guide is weight. One published US price list charges USD 650[6] for a pet under a pound, $2,095 plus $49 a pound for pets of 6 to 19 lb, and $2,781 plus $69 a pound above 20 lb[7]. On our reading of that list, a 10 lb cat comes to about USD 2,291–2,585[8]. Other studios charge less, and some more.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Florida
Most people never need to think about law when preserving a pet. The exceptions are wild or native animals, pets that died of a notifiable disease, and pets sent across a border, where animal health paperwork may apply. If any of those fit, raise it with your vet and practitioner first. Anything you don't keep follows the ordinary burial and scattering rules.

What to do now, and what can wait
- Check how warm the room is first. Switch the air conditioning on, or move your pet to whichever concrete or tiled floor in the house stays coldest.
- Use what you have tonight. An emptied kitchen freezer shelf, or bagged ice in a cooler with a towel laid over it, keeps a small pet until morning.
- Leave the coat dry. Paper towel around the mouth and rear is all you need; soaked fur turns into frozen clumps that make the practitioner's job harder.
- Write down when you found your pet and the time they were put in the cold; a best guess is fine if you aren't sure.
- Phone your vet when they open if your pet won't fit in your freezer, and be clear that a preservation specialist will be taking them.
- Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, with their species, weight and a photo of how they look now.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in North Miami Beach each year?
Our estimate is around 1,400. It comes from North Miami Beach's population (about 46,236), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 17,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in North Miami Beach?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from North Miami Beach?
Usually yes. North Miami is about 2 miles away, Sunny Isles Beach is about 3 miles away and Aventura is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in North Miami Beach follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is freeze-drying or taxidermy better for my pet?
Neither is better in general. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's actual body and suits sleeping or lying poses; it takes longer and is more sensitive to humidity. Taxidermy fits tanned skin over a sculpted form, allows sitting or alert poses and depends heavily on the artist's sculpting. Freeze-drying is the more common choice, at 62.3%[10] of the market by one industry estimate.
Will humidity in North Miami Beach damage a freeze-dried pet?
It can over time, which is why placement matters. Freeze-dried tissue can reabsorb moisture from damp air, softening features or attracting insects. Keep your pet in a dry, well-aired room away from bathrooms, basements and exterior walls. A sealed glass case and a dehumidifier during the wettest months give extra protection.
