Pet preservation in North Miami

North Miami, Florida

Where North Miami owners find freezer space and practitioners

In many North Miami families, grief is shared openly, with relatives crowding into the living room and prayers offered in Haitian Creole, Spanish or English. Saying goodbye to a pet can borrow those customs: people gathered at home, a lit candle, and everyone sharing one memory. Families who would like a last private moment before cremation should say so at the start.

Children in North Miami might never have known a day without that animal, and may feel the loss in ways they cannot put into words. Give them a part in the farewell: a drawing taped beside the urn, a letter read aloud, or choosing a spot on the shelf. Short, truthful replies help, and so does seeing adults grieve without hiding it.

Around North Miami, the nearest vet may also treat farm animals and keep a large freezer at the practice for them. It's worth asking about. Mixed practices sometimes have more cold storage than town clinics, and rural vets tend to be calm and practical about unusual requests. Explain that your pet needs to stay frozen, flat and undisturbed until you've chosen a practitioner.

North Miami is home to about 60,884 people, the 53rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 7 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover North Miami run from there.

Families in North Miami often end up using a provider from North Miami Beach (2 miles), Sunny Isles Beach (4 miles) and Aventura (5 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Our estimate

22,500

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in North Miami

How we calculated this

60,884 ÷ 2.5 = 24,354 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 22,500. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

1,850

dog and cat deaths per year in North Miami, our estimate

How we calculated this

22,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,850 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

The published sources behind those figures are Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry.

Aftercare traditions in Florida, and choosing to preserve

Because around 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, aftercare providers here are organised around cremation, and preservation specialists are few by comparison. That's a reason to plan the handover carefully if you combine the two. Agree in writing who takes your pet first, who removes any part being preserved, and that the cremation of the rest is private so the ashes you get back are your pet's.

We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for North Miami, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

North Miami weather, freezing and power cuts

In August, when North Miami highs sit near 91°F, even the walk from the car to the clinic door warms a pet's body. Carry them in a cooler rather than in your arms, park in shade and keep the air conditioning running. A pet who died of heatstroke is already very hot inside, so press ice packs against the belly and chest to cool them quickly before freezing.

Summer humidity in North Miami matters long after your pet comes home. Freeze-dried tissue can slowly take moisture back from damp air, which can soften features or invite pests. Keep a preserved pet in an air-conditioned room, away from bathrooms and exterior walls, and consider a sealed glass case. In August, run a dehumidifier if the room feels sticky.

What pet preservation costs in North Miami

Pet preservation is priced by weight, method and pose, not by city, so what you'd pay from North Miami depends mostly on your pet and the practitioner you choose. One US price guide quotes freeze-drying a cat or small dog at $1,000–$2,500[6] and traditional taxidermy at $800–$2,500[7]. Large dogs cost several thousand dollars more. The published prices below come from US price lists and cost guides.

The full price table by product is on our Florida page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Wildlife permits, shipping and local rules in Florida

If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for Florida below covers the rest.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Stop the clock. Warmth is the enemy here; the first thing to do is get your pet down onto the coolest hard floor you have.
  2. Call ahead if your freezer can't take your pet: a vet or emergency clinic may hold them, and ask for a freezer, not a fridge.
  3. Set aside the collar, tags and a favorite blanket. Don't cut or trim the coat yet; the practitioner can tell you where a keepsake lock can safely come from.
  4. Bag and freeze your pet within a few hours, double-wrapped, in a natural resting pose.
  5. Decide on the method: whole-body freeze-drying, traditional taxidermy, or a partial piece with the rest cremated.
  6. Agree everything in writing, covering what the practitioner does if they find damage after thawing.

Other ways to keep your pet close

Mourning a pet can feel especially heavy in a household where the animal was part of everyone's day, greeting the children after school and keeping a grandparent company. Speak about it with the family or with someone at church. Bereavement hotlines for animal owners cost nothing, and it makes sense to book a therapist if the sadness is still disrupting your job or your nights a month later.

Questions people ask

Is North Miami big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 22,500 North Miami households keep a dog or cat and around 1,850 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 60,884), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 7 miles from North Miami) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from North Miami?

Usually yes. North Miami Beach is about 2 miles away, Sunny Isles Beach is about 4 miles away and Aventura is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the North Miami page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

What if the power goes out while my pet is in the freezer?

Keep the freezer shut and cover it with blankets for insulation. US food-safety guidance says a full freezer holds its temperature for about two days and a half-full one about a day, if the door stays closed. If the outage will run longer, buy dry ice, handle it with gloves and place it on top, or move your pet to a freezer that has power.

Can I put my pet in the kitchen freezer?

Yes, if they fit and the freezer runs cold, as long as they're sealed in two heavy bags and kept apart from food in a box or bin. Small pets such as hamsters, rats, budgies and kittens fit easily. For a cat or dog, a chest freezer is usually easier. Avoid a fridge for anything longer than a few hours.
