Alsip, Illinois
Where Alsip owners find freezer space and practitioners
Alsip's spot along I-294 and its industrial corridors means many residents work long or irregular hours, and a pet's last day may need careful timing. Your vet may offer a house call or an early, calm appointment. If you can, give each family member a moment alone with the pet before the provider takes it, even if that means a short wait.
Many Alsip families hold a small farewell at home, with photos on the table, a candle, the pet's collar and a few shared memories. Others choose a walk along the Cal-Sag Trail or a quiet visit to a place the pet loved. Planting flowers in spring with a little ash mixed in gives the memory an outdoor home that you can tend for years.
With about 18,483 people, Alsip isn't likely to have a pet preserver of its own, and that's true of most towns. It doesn't stop you. Get your pet frozen solid, then choose a practitioner anywhere in the country by the quality of their pet work. Families from small towns do this all the time, usually by overnight shipping or a single long drive.
Alsip is home to about 18,483 people, the 138th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Alsip are based about 16 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Alsip sits within easy reach of Blue Island (3 miles), Oak Lawn (3 miles, a larger centre) and Evergreen Park (4 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Alsip; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
6,800
How many dog- or cat-owning households Alsip has (estimate)
How we calculated this
18,483 ÷ 2.5 = 7,393 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,800. A household with several pets counts once.

How we calculated this
6,800 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 570 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation
Roughly 60.2%[5] of people in Illinois are cremated, and the rest are mostly buried, so families here are used to both ideas. Preservation is a third way of keeping a pet close, and one with a hard deadline: it has to be decided on, at least provisionally, before the body warms. Freeze first, and the burial or cremation choice for anything you don't keep can wait.
That Illinois rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Alsip only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How Alsip's climate affects the first hours
In January, February, March and December, it's tempting to leave a pet outside in Alsip because it's cold enough. Please don't. Sunlight, wild animals and daytime thaws are all real risks, and a preserved pet needs to have stayed frozen without interruption. If there's no freezer space at home, ask your vet, or a friend with a chest freezer, to hold your pet for a few days.
Dry indoor heat through Alsip winters is fine for a preserved pet, but placement still matters. Keep the piece away from radiators, heating vents and fireplaces, which dry and crack delicate features, and away from cold windows where condensation forms. A shelf on an inside wall, out of direct sun, usually suits a freeze-dried or mounted pet well year-round.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Alsip
Waiting is part of the cost. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[6], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[7]. One studio offers faster turnaround of six to eight weeks for 50% more[8]. A rush fee can make sense, but a frozen pet can safely wait, so it's rarely necessary.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Illinois
Taxidermy licensing mostly exists to stop trade in protected wildlife, not to regulate pet owners. Still, a careful practitioner will ask what species your pet is and where they came from, and may ask for proof that an unusual pet was legally kept. That's a good sign. If part of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, the usual rules for Illinois apply to that part.

The Illinois page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Alsip's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your checklist, in the order it matters
- Take a breath. If your pet was frozen quickly, you have time. If they weren't, freeze them now anyway and ask a practitioner honestly.
- Describe exactly what happened when you reach out: the time of death, the gap before your pet was frozen, and how warm the room was.
- Choose the pose with the practitioner. Closed-eye sleeping poses usually look the most natural.
- Send reference photos, including the face in good light and anything distinctive about how your pet sat or lay.
- Pay only the agreed deposit, and keep the written quote, return date and refund terms somewhere safe.
- Prepare a spot at home for their return, one that's out of direct sunlight and clear of moisture and heating vents.
Keepsakes, displays and gentler options
Grief for an animal doesn't always get the recognition it deserves, but it is real. National pet-loss lines offer free support, and clinics around Alsip and Oak Lawn may know of groups that meet locally. For children, keeping the pet's photo out and talking about it openly usually helps more than tidying everything away quickly. Adults deserve the same patience with themselves.

Questions people ask
How do Illinois attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Illinois human cremation rate at about 60.2%[5]. We show it on the Alsip page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Where are the providers that serve Alsip actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Chicago, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Alsip and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Roughly how many pets die in Alsip each year?
Our estimate is around 570. It comes from Alsip's population (about 18,483), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 6,800 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Alsip?
The closest communities we cover are Blue Island (about 3 miles), Oak Lawn (about 3 miles) and Evergreen Park (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Alsip too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
What if the power goes out while my pet is in the freezer?
Keep the freezer shut and cover it with blankets for insulation. US food-safety guidance says a full freezer holds its temperature for about two days and a half-full one about a day, if the door stays closed. If the outage will run longer, buy dry ice, handle it with gloves and place it on top, or move your pet to a freezer that has power.
Can I ship my pet frozen from Alsip to a practitioner in another state?
Usually, yes. Most practitioners who take shipped pets ask for them frozen solid for at least a day or two, double-bagged, packed in a thick cooler with dry ice and sent overnight on a Monday or Tuesday. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service they want. Return shipping of the finished piece is often quoted separately.
