Preserving your pet from Lombard: the first hours and beyond

Lombard, Illinois

Preserving a pet from Lombard: the local picture

If grief is weighing on you, counselors in DuPage County work with pet loss, and national helplines run by veterinary colleges are free. Some people feel it for a few weeks, others for months, and both are normal. A walk past Lilacia Park, looking through photos or writing a letter to the pet can help the feelings move rather than get stuck.

A farewell can be small: family in the backyard, a short reading, a lit candle and some lilac or other flowers in season. Children may want to bury a favorite toy or draw a picture, and it helps to let them choose. If you follow a faith, ask your clergy whether they will say a prayer; many will, gladly, whatever the species. Afterward, keep the collar or tags somewhere you'll see them.

In a town like Lombard, the local vet may never have had a preservation request. Explain simply that you'd like your pet frozen, not refrigerated, and kept out of the cremation collection. If the clinic has no freezer space, most rural homes have a chest freezer somewhere, and a relative's will do for a few days while you choose a practitioner.

With roughly 44,399 residents, Lombard is the 34th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 20 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lombard run from there.

For a second opinion on price, Villa Park (2 miles), Glen Ellyn (2 miles) and Addison (4 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Lombard routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Our estimate

16,500

How many dog- or cat-owning households Lombard has (estimate)

How we calculated this

44,399 ÷ 2.5 = 17,760 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 16,500. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

1,350

dog and cat deaths per year in Lombard, our estimate

How we calculated this

16,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,350 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Illinois thinks about cremation, and where preservation fits

Cremation stands at about 60.2%[5] in Illinois, and many families mix traditions across generations. Older relatives may remember pets buried under a tree in the yard; younger ones may think of ashes, or even freeze-drying. It can help to let each person say what they would keep if they could: a paw, a collar, a photo, the whole pet. The answers often overlap more than you'd expect.

Lombard weather, freezing and power cuts

Winter storms in Lombard can bring ice, fallen lines and days without power. If your pet is waiting in a freezer, keep the lid closed, pile blankets on top and find dry ice or a generator before the second day. A full chest freezer kept shut holds its cold far longer than an upright model, and a garage freezer in January gets some help from the weather.

Dry indoor heat through Lombard winters is fine for a preserved pet, but placement still matters. Keep the piece away from radiators, heating vents and fireplaces, which dry and crack delicate features, and away from cold windows where condensation forms. A shelf on an inside wall, out of direct sun, usually suits a freeze-dried or mounted pet well year-round.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Lombard

Published prices and waits for Lombard owners

Pet insurance rarely helps here. Standard policies generally don't cover aftercare, and end-of-life add-ons have low ceilings; one wellness add-on could reimburse up to $650[6] toward cremation, burial and keepsakes. Budget from savings, try our preservation cost estimator and ask whether the practitioner takes a deposit up front with the balance due before return shipping.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Illinois

Preserving a domestic pet is generally allowed, and most rules that touch taxidermy are about wildlife. Many places license taxidermists who work on game animals and restrict what can be done with native wild birds and protected reptiles. A cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. If your pet is a native species, ask the practitioner which permits apply before you ship. Burial and scattering rules only come into it for any part of your pet that's buried or cremated.

Just lost your pet? An order to follow

  1. Tell your child what's happening in simple words before their pet goes into the freezer, so it isn't a secret kept in the kitchen.
  2. Double-bag a small pet and place them in a lidded tub, so they can't be squashed by frozen food.
  3. Let your child help pick a pose by looking through photos together: asleep in a curl, or upright the way they'd wait by the cage door.
  4. Explain the wait honestly: it will be months, and when their pet comes back they'll look like they're sleeping, not awake.
  5. Make a memory box together during the months of waiting, filling it with a drawing, a favorite photo and the name card off the cage.
  6. Agree where the finished piece will live, somewhere your child can see it without handling it every day.

Keepsakes, displays and gentler options

Lombard is a village where neighbors often know each other's pets by name, which can make a loss feel both supported and very public. It's fine to let people know, and fine to ask for quiet. If the pet's death is planned, ask your vet whether a visit at home is possible, so the goodbye happens in a familiar place.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lombard?

Usually yes. Villa Park is about 2 miles away, Glen Ellyn is about 2 miles away and Addison is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 20 miles from Lombard) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How many pet owners live in Lombard?

By our estimate, about 16,500 households in Lombard have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,350 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 44,399, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

How does Lombard's weather affect pet aftercare?

July is the hottest month in Lombard, with average highs around 85°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.

How much does it cost to freeze-dry a pet from Lombard?

US guides put freeze-drying a cat or small dog at $1,000–$2,500[8], and traditional taxidermy at $800–$2,500[9]. Weight makes a big difference: one studio lists USD 650[10] for a pet under a pound and $2,781 plus $69 a pound for dogs over 20 lb[11]. Add bases, posing and shipping both ways, and ask for a written total.

What should I send the practitioner besides my pet?

Photographs, and plenty of them. The face in good daylight from the front and both sides, how your pet's ears and eyes looked when relaxed, their favorite sleeping position and any unusual markings. Mention quirks too, like a tongue that always poked out. Practitioners never met your pet, so these details are what make the finished piece look like them rather than any cat or dog.
