Arranging preservation from Woodstock: the practical side
Woodstock feels like a small town even with the Chicago area creeping closer, and word of a pet's death tends to travel among neighbors, church friends and regulars at the coffee shops on the square. When there's warning, many McHenry County vets will drive out and do the procedure at home, letting the animal stay in its sunny spot. Everyone who loved it can say goodbye there.
A Woodstock goodbye may be a candle on a front sill, a few friends in the backyard, or a slow loop around the square where the animal used to ride along. Some households wait for the remains and then hold a short gathering at the kitchen table. Children often want to contribute, so let them paint a rock, pick out a frame or choose where a May planting will go.
In a town like Woodstock, the local vet may never have had a preservation request. Explain simply that you'd like your pet frozen, not refrigerated, and kept out of the cremation collection. If the clinic has no freezer space, most rural homes have a chest freezer somewhere, and a relative's will do for a few days while you choose a practitioner.
Woodstock is home to about 25,740 people, the 86th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 51 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Woodstock run from there.
Woodstock sits within easy reach of Crystal Lake (7 miles), McHenry (8 miles) and Huntley (10 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Woodstock; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
9,450
How many dog- or cat-owning households Woodstock has (estimate)
How we calculated this
25,740 ÷ 2.5 = 10,296 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,450. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
790
Woodstock families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
9,450 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 790 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local cremation habits mean for your request
Roughly 60.2%[5] of those who die in Illinois are cremated. Whichever way your family leans, preservation doesn't have to replace it. Some families bury the body and keep a cleaned skull; others cremate and keep a single freeze-dried paw. Think about how a preserved piece would fit alongside the ways your family already remembers the people and animals it has lost.
The Illinois figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons, shipping and humidity in Woodstock
Humidity matters once your preserved pet comes home to Woodstock. Freeze-dried tissue can take up moisture from damp air, so keep the piece in a dry room, out of direct sun and away from bathrooms and heating vents. A glass case helps in any climate, especially if you have other pets or children.

How much to budget for preservation
Waiting is part of the cost. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[6], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[7]. One studio offers faster turnaround of six to eight weeks for 50% more[8]. A rush fee can make sense, but a frozen pet can safely wait, so it's rarely necessary.

Permits, contracts and paperwork in Illinois
Preserving a domestic pet is generally allowed, and most rules that touch taxidermy are about wildlife. Many places license taxidermists who work on game animals and restrict what can be done with native wild birds and protected reptiles. A cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. If your pet is a native species, ask the practitioner which permits apply before you ship. Burial and scattering rules only come into it for any part of your pet that's buried or cremated.
Illinois keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Woodstock.
For Illinois's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Illinois guide. Local rules in Woodstock can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Just lost your pet? An order to follow
- Freeze first, decide later. A pet frozen quickly and kept frozen can wait weeks while you choose.
- Blot, don't wash. Pat away any fluid with a paper towel and leave the fur dry.
- Pose gently and bag tightly. Curl them as if asleep, then seal them in two thick bags, squeezing out the air so the face and ears don't get freezer burn.
- Plan for a power cut. Work out now where dry ice or a spare freezer could come from, in case the power stayed off longer than a day.
- Ask two or three practitioners if they accept an animal of your pet's kind and weight, what their current wait looks like, and how they prefer to receive pets.
- Ship or drop off frozen; if it's going by courier, send it at the start of the week and request a message as soon as it's in their hands.
Once the finished piece is home in Woodstock
Grief can settle in hard during a long McHenry County winter, when rooms go quiet, darkness falls before supper and the usual routines around feeding and letting the animal out suddenly disappear. Clinics around McHenry County may have heard of a grief group, and there are national helplines for grieving owners. Getting outside on a bright afternoon, even briefly, can loosen the weight a little.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Woodstock each year?
Our estimate is around 790. It comes from Woodstock's population (about 25,740), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 9,450 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Is cremation common in Illinois?
For people, yes: about 60.2%[5] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Woodstock follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Woodstock?
The closest communities we cover are Crystal Lake (about 7 miles), McHenry (about 8 miles) and Huntley (about 10 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Woodstock too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 51 miles from Woodstock) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What if the power goes out while my pet is in the freezer?
Keep the freezer shut and cover it with blankets for insulation. US food-safety guidance says a full freezer holds its temperature for about two days and a half-full one about a day, if the door stays closed. If the outage will run longer, buy dry ice, handle it with gloves and place it on top, or move your pet to a freezer that has power.
Do I need a permit to have a wild bird preserved in the US?
Most native wild birds are protected under federal law, and possessing one, even a bird you found dead, can be illegal without a permit. Domestic and captive-bred birds, such as budgies, cockatiels, parrots, chickens and domestic pigeons, are generally outside those rules. If your bird is anything else, ask the practitioner and your state wildlife agency before you ship.
