Pet freeze-drying and taxidermy in Carlsbad

Carlsbad, New Mexico

Getting your pet frozen and to a specialist from Carlsbad

Some Carlsbad families gather along the riverwalk once the ashes are back, trading stories as dusk settles over Lake Carlsbad. Others donate to an animal rescue or plant a tree in the pet's honor. Younger children may like to paint a rock or pick the photograph for the urn. Rituals like these help a household remember together and carry the animal's story forward.

Families new to Carlsbad, far from relatives, can find the loss of an animal especially lonely. Helplines and online groups for bereaved owners never close, and local shelters, vets and congregations can often suggest support closer to home. Feeling the loss for months is common, and it doesn't mean you're coping badly. A coworker who has lost an animal of their own may understand better than you expect.

Plenty of households around Carlsbad already own a chest freezer for meat or garden produce. That's useful now. Clear a shelf or a corner, double-bag your pet with the air pressed out and keep them separate from food in their own bin or box. Set the freezer to its coldest and leave the lid shut, even when you'd like to look.

About 32,524 people live in Carlsbad, which makes it the 8th-largest of the 11 New Mexico communities we cover.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Roswell (69 miles), Odessa (117 miles, a larger centre) and Horizon City (125 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

12,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households Carlsbad has (estimate)

How we calculated this

32,524 ÷ 2.5 = 13,010 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,000. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

1,000

Carlsbad families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

12,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,000 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation

Cremation is the norm in New Mexico: roughly 70.5%[5] of people who die there are cremated. Many families who choose preservation still end up using a crematory as well, for the parts of the pet they aren't keeping. A preserved paw with the rest of your pet cremated privately is a common pairing, and it fits comfortably with the way most people here already think about aftercare.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the New Mexico figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Carlsbad tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Seasons, shipping and humidity in Carlsbad

When highs reach about 97°F in Carlsbad, shipping your pet needs extra care. Practitioners usually want pets packed in a thick cooler with plenty of dry ice and sent overnight early in the week, so the box never sits on a hot dock over a weekend. Ask them how much dry ice to use in summer, and never leave the packed cooler in a hot car.

With May, June, July, August and September running hot in Carlsbad, the window between death and damage is short. Don't lay your pet on a soft bed or carpet, which holds heat against the body, and don't leave them in a car, even briefly. If you have to transport them to a clinic freezer, pack them in a cooler with bagged ice under a towel and run the air conditioning.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them

Birds, reptiles and small mammals have their own price points. One US studio lists $650–$1,350[6] for a small bird, with bearded dragons around $850 and hedgehogs, rats or ferrets around $950[6]. Small pets also ship in smaller coolers with less dry ice, so the total from Carlsbad is usually far lower than for a cat or dog.

The New Mexico price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in New Mexico

Before you commit to preservation, check two things with the practitioner: whether your species needs any permit where they are, and whether they're allowed to receive it. Rules for domestic cats and dogs are light; rules for native birds and reptiles can be strict and vary by place. If the rest of your pet is going to be buried or cremated, check what New Mexico allows for home burial and scattering too.

The New Mexico page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Carlsbad's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A checklist for the first hours

  1. Check how warm the room is first. Turn on the air conditioning or carry your pet to the coolest tiled or concrete floor in the house.
  2. Use what you have tonight. A cleared kitchen freezer, or a cooler of bagged ice under a towel, will hold a small pet until morning.
  3. Leave the coat dry. Paper towel around the mouth and rear is all you need; soaked fur turns into frozen clumps that make the practitioner's job harder.
  4. Write down when you found your pet and when they went into the cold, even if you have to estimate.
  5. Phone your vet when they open if your pet won't fit in your freezer, and be clear that a preservation specialist will be taking them.
  6. Contact practitioners once your pet is frozen solid, telling them what kind of animal, how heavy, and attaching a current photo.

Living with a preserved pet in Carlsbad

In Carlsbad, a farewell often has to be squeezed between oilfield shifts and school pickups. Even five minutes beside the animal before collection gives each person room to say what they need to. If the provider is based far away, ask about meeting at a local clinic instead, which may be quicker and easier on the family during a hot afternoon.

The services page is the place to compare what is included, or compare your instinct with the poll results, use the free tools before you ring anyone, browse in-depth guides or recent articles. You can also browse every city in the United States. Nearby, we also cover Rio Rancho, Farmington, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and every city in New Mexico.

Questions people ask

Why does the Carlsbad page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of New Mexico residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Is Carlsbad big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 12,000 Carlsbad households keep a dog or cat and around 1,000 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 32,524), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Carlsbad?

The closest communities we cover are Roswell (about 69 miles), Odessa (about 117 miles) and Horizon City (about 125 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Carlsbad too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Does the Carlsbad climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In June, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Is preservation worth it if the nearest practitioner is far from Carlsbad?

Distance matters less than you might think. Most families who preserve a pet send them frozen to a practitioner chosen for the quality of their work, not their address, often hundreds of miles away. What distance does add is cost and planning: a cooler, dry ice, an overnight shipping counter or a long drive. Ask practitioners to include delivery in their quote.

How long will I wait for a preserved pet?

Months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[8], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[9]. Add the practitioner's queue before your pet even goes into the chamber. Ask for an estimated return date in writing, and ask whether they send updates along the way.
