Rockhampton, Queensland
Where Rockhampton owners find freezer space and practitioners
Rockhampton is a country city where people still talk over the fence, and that helps when a pet dies. Many families leave their animal on its bed on the verandah for a while so kids and neighbours can come and say goodbye. You can ask to go along to the provider, or be there when your pet is picked up. Nobody says it has to be quick.
Some Rockhampton families hold a small backyard service, some plant a tree, and some mark the day with a quiet drink on the verandah at sunset. Each of those is right. Children do better with honest answers than with stories about farms far away, and a small job, like painting a rock for the garden, gives them a way in. On stations, losses may be marked quietly.
News travels in a place like Rockhampton, and some owners worry about what neighbors will think of a preserved pet. You don't owe anyone an explanation. Preservation is an old, ordinary choice, and plenty of people keep a paw, a tail or a whole pet at home quietly. Decide what feels right for your family first, and let the rest follow.
Rockhampton's population is around 79,000, the 8th-largest of the 8 Queensland communities we cover.
Our estimate
26,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Rockhampton has (estimate)
How we calculated this
79,000 ÷ 2.5 = 31,600 households; × 49% (dog) + 34% (cat) = 26,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,200
Rockhampton families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
26,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
49%[1]
49% of Australian households have at least one dog, up from 40% in 2019.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
34%[3]
34% of Australian households have at least one cat, up from 27% in 2019.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Aftercare traditions in Australia, and choosing to preserve
Where cremation is as common as it is in Australia, at about 71%[5], a preservation request can surprise the clinic desk. Staff may gently check that you understand the cost and the wait. That's care, not judgment. Give a short, firm answer, such as asking for your pet to be frozen for a preservation specialist, and ask them to write it on the file so the next shift doesn't route your pet to the crematory out of habit.
The Australia figure comes from FuneralSmart (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Heat, cold and a freezer that mustn't fail in Rockhampton
Humidity matters once your preserved pet comes home to Rockhampton. Freeze-dried tissue can take up moisture from damp air, so keep the piece in a dry room, out of direct sun and away from bathrooms and heating vents. A glass case helps in any climate, especially if you have other pets or children.

Prices by pet size, and what adds to them
With few specialists spread across large distances, most families in Australia and New Zealand choose a practitioner by their pet work and then plan the delivery. Ask whether they accept frozen pets by courier, what packing they want, and how the finished piece comes home. Get the deposit and full price in writing before anything is sent.
We keep the detailed Queensland price table on one page so it stays current: see Queensland prices.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in Queensland
Most of the paperwork you'll sign for preservation is a contract, not a permit. Read what it says about the deposit, storage fees if you can't collect on time, and what happens to your pet if the studio closes or the practitioner falls ill. Keep a copy with your pet's photos. For whatever won't be kept, the rules for Queensland below apply.
In Australia, many pet parrots, cockatoos and pythons are native species kept under state licences, and preserving or keeping their remains can need a permit from your state wildlife authority. Domestic cats, dogs and introduced species are simpler. Summer heat makes freezing within hours essential, and distances are long, so ask practitioners how they want pets delivered across states.
The rules that apply across Queensland (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Queensland page. Rockhampton may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do first if you might preserve your pet
- Don't rush into a decision, rush into a freezer. Which method and which practitioner are questions that can wait.
- Keep your pet away from warmth: no soft bedding, no sunny window, no car.
- Wrap them in two heavy bags, air pressed out, and freeze within hours.
- Talk with the people you live with about where a preserved pet would live and who would see it every day.
- Look at finished pets of your species by each practitioner; untouched photos in natural light tell you most.
- Ask for a written quote covering base, chosen pose, shipping there and back, and later touch-ups.
- Expect a long wait and plan how you'll mark those months, for example with a small memorial at home.
Once the finished piece is home in Rockhampton
When a pet dies during a flood, a cyclone warning or a stinking February week, everything feels rushed, and the grief often lands later, once life is back to normal. Give it room. A sunrise from Mount Archer or an evening by the river can help. If sadness hangs on for months, national pet bereavement services are available by phone and online, any time of year.

If you live between Rockhampton and Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Toowoomba and Gold Coast, either page applies. Every other community in Queensland, and all of Australia, is listed too.

Questions people ask
Why does the Rockhampton page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. FuneralSmart (2023) reports about 71%[5] of Australia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Rockhampton each year?
Our estimate is around 2,200. It comes from Rockhampton's population (about 79,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 26,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Overnight shipping doesn't reach my town. What can I do?
Many rural families drive the packed cooler to a depot or shipping counter in a larger centre such as Rockhampton, timed for the day's last overnight collection. Call ahead to confirm the cut-off and that they accept dry ice. Alternatively, some practitioners work with pet couriers, or you may prefer a single long drive to drop your pet off in person.
Can my vet in Rockhampton freeze my pet for me?
Many vets can hold a pet frozen for a few days, but you have to ask, because the usual routine is to send deceased pets for cremation. Tell the clinic as soon as possible that you're considering preservation, ask them to freeze rather than refrigerate, and ask them to note it on the paperwork. Check how long they can keep your pet and when you need to collect.
What if the power goes out while my pet is in the freezer?
Keep the freezer shut and cover it with blankets for insulation. US food-safety guidance says a full freezer holds its temperature for about two days and a half-full one about a day, if the door stays closed. If the outage will run longer, buy dry ice, handle it with gloves and place it on top, or move your pet to a freezer that has power.
Is there a pet taxidermist in Rockhampton?
Possibly, but pet specialists are rare everywhere, so don't assume the closest taxidermist is the right one. Many mount game animals and see few pets. Most families choose a practitioner by the quality of their finished cats, dogs or birds, then ship their pet frozen overnight or drive it there. Tell us your pet's species and weight, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from Rockhampton.
