Preserving your pet from Southampton: the first hours and beyond
By our estimate, about 76,000 households in Southampton have a dog or cat. Only a small share of families ever consider preservation, so if you're one of them, here's how to freeze your pet in time and what comes next.
- What to tell your vet or emergency clinic
- Freezer and power-cut backup plans
- Practitioners chosen by portfolio, not postcode

Where Southampton owners find freezer space and practitioners
Some Southampton families mark a loss by watching the ships slip down Southampton Water at dusk, spending a morning on the Common or in the New Forest, or planting something in the garden. Others wait for the anniversary. What matters is that it feels right to you. If grief is weighing on work or sleep after several weeks, speak to your GP.
Students, shift workers at the port and families who moved to Southampton for work often live far from relatives, and losing a pet can feel very lonely. Mourning a pet deserves the same patience as any bereavement. Tell a friend or colleague, talk it over with your vet, and consider UK pet bereavement support lines or online groups, which exist for exactly this.
Shipping a frozen pet from Southampton is more routine than it sounds. Practitioners who accept pets by post usually ask for an overnight service sent on a Monday or Tuesday, so the box never sits in a depot over a weekend. Before you pack anything, ask your chosen practitioner which carrier and service they want, and whether they'll book the collection for you.
With roughly 253,000 residents, Southampton is the 14th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Brighton, about 55 miles (89 km) away, which is where some providers serving Southampton are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Winchester (11 miles), Portsmouth (15 miles) and Reading (42 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
76,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Southampton
How we calculated this
253,000 ÷ 2.4 = 105,417 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 76,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
6,200
Estimated dog and cat losses in Southampton each year
How we calculated this
76,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 6,200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local aftercare habits and pet preservation
Cremation is the norm in England: roughly 83.0%[5] of people who die there are cremated. Many families who choose preservation still end up using a crematory as well, for the parts of the pet they aren't keeping. A preserved paw with the rest of your pet cremated privately is a common pairing, and it fits comfortably with the way most people here already think about aftercare.

Southampton weather, freezing and power cuts
Whatever the weather in Southampton, a freezer is the only safe place to hold a pet for preservation. Fridges, cool rooms and outdoor spaces all let the body keep changing. If you don't have space at home, ask your vet, an emergency clinic or a friend with a chest freezer to hold your pet for a few days.

Preservation prices beside other aftercare
Because there are only a handful of pet specialists in the UK, most families choose from a national shortlist rather than a local one, and a courier or careful drive becomes part of the budget. Ask what delivery and collection cost each way, and whether the quote changes if the practitioner finds your pet heavier than you estimated.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for England: England costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What England rules mean for a preserved pet
If your pet bit someone shortly before dying, or showed signs of a disease that authorities must be told about, public-health rules come before any aftercare plan, and required testing can rule preservation out. Your vet will know what applies. For ordinary deaths from age, illness or accident, preservation raises no legal issue, and the burial and scattering guidance for England below covers the rest.
In the UK, pet preservation specialists are few, and families often choose from a national shortlist and arrange a courier or drive. Most native wild birds are protected, and selling or commercially displaying some species needs a certificate, so tell the practitioner exactly what your pet is. A domestic cat, dog, rabbit or captive-bred parrot is usually straightforward. Ask your vet to freeze your pet, not send them for cremation, while you decide.
The England page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Southampton's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
The first hours, step by step
- Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment, not afterward, so the clinic can plan where your pet will be held once they've died.
- Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible for the injection or catheter, and to tell you which leg they'll use.
- Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so there's no delay between the appointment and a freezer, whether that's at home or at the clinic.
- Take your time saying goodbye, then settle your pet into the curled or resting shape you'd like before their body stiffens.
- If you've already picked a practitioner, check with them in advance how they prefer a pet posed and bagged for the freezer.
- Note the time of death and the time of freezing on your phone. Every practitioner will ask for both.
Remembering your pet while you wait
In Southampton, many families say goodbye at home with the curtains drawn and the family gathered, while others do it at the vet practice with a little time set aside afterwards. A few unhurried minutes matter. Bring a blanket, take photographs, and ask whether an individual cremation allows you to be present if that would help. Some families also place a flower or a note with their pet.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in England?
For people, yes: about 83.0%[5] of England deaths end in cremation, according to Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Southampton follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Southampton actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Brighton, about 55 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Southampton and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Southampton?
Usually yes. Winchester is about 11 miles away, Portsmouth is about 15 miles away and Reading is about 42 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many pets die in Southampton each year?
Our estimate is around 6,200. It comes from Southampton's population (about 253,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 76,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can I put my pet in the kitchen freezer?
Yes, if they fit and the freezer runs cold, as long as they're sealed in two heavy bags and kept apart from food in a box or bin. Small pets such as hamsters, rats, budgies and kittens fit easily. For a cat or dog, a chest freezer is usually easier. Avoid a fridge for anything longer than a few hours.
How quickly do I need to freeze my pet for preservation?
Within a few hours if you can, and sooner in warm weather. Warmth loosens the skin's grip on the fur, and once fur starts slipping a practitioner can't reverse it. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. You can choose the method and the practitioner later.
