What pet preservation is like in Miami Beach
In a city where many people live alone in apartments, a pet can be the center of daily life, and the silence after a loss can be hard. Tell a neighbor or friend. A farewell can be small: a candle by the window, a few words spoken out loud, a moment by the water at sunrise. For a formal goodbye before cremation, raise it when you contact providers.
Some people on Miami Beach mark a pet's death with an early morning at the ocean, watching the sun rise over the Atlantic from the spot where they used to sit together. Others wait until the ashes come home and gather a few friends in the apartment with food and photographs. There is no correct way, and no deadline for doing it. Choose what fits you and the animal you knew.
Dry ice isn't always stocked in a town the size of Miami Beach. If you're shipping your pet to a distant practitioner, you may need to buy it in a larger centre such as Miami on the morning you send. Handle it with gloves, keep the car windows cracked while you drive and never seal it into an airtight container, because the gas needs to escape.
With roughly 81,594 residents, Miami Beach is the 38th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Miami, about 4 miles (7 km) away, which is where some providers serving Miami Beach are based.
Our pages for Miami (4 miles, a larger centre), North Miami (6 miles) and North Miami Beach (8 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Miami Beach as well.
Our estimate
30,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Miami Beach has (estimate)
How we calculated this
81,594 ÷ 2.5 = 32,638 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 30,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
2,500
dog and cat deaths per year in Miami Beach, our estimate
How we calculated this
30,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,500 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]

What local cremation habits mean for your request
Cremation is chosen for about 72.5%[5] of deaths in Florida, and local pet crematories have built whole menus around it: engraved urns, clay paw prints, fur clippings. That's useful even if you're drawn to preservation, because it shows how much can be kept without keeping the body. If you're torn, freeze first, ask a crematory which keepsakes they'd return with the ashes and compare that with a practitioner's quote.
For the Florida figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Miami Beach rather than as pet data.
How Miami Beach weather changes your timeline
Hot months in Miami Beach bring storms and heavy demand on the power grid, and a freezer that loses power can undo everything. If an outage hits, keep the freezer lid shut, cover it with blankets for insulation and buy dry ice if the power will be off for more than a day. A full chest freezer stays frozen far longer than a half-empty upright one.
When highs reach about 91°F in Miami Beach, shipping your pet needs extra care. Practitioners usually want pets packed in a thick cooler with plenty of dry ice and sent overnight early in the week, so the box never sits on a hot dock over a weekend. Ask them how much dry ice to use in summer, and never leave the packed cooler in a hot car.

Budgeting for freeze-drying or taxidermy from Miami Beach
Shipping, a custom base and special positioning all sit on top of the headline price. One price guide puts add-ons such as bases or posing at about $150–$800[6], and return shipping of the finished piece is often quoted separately. By our estimate, freeze-drying costs about six times as much as an average pet cremation[7], so ask for a written total before you pay a deposit.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing in Florida
Shipping a frozen pet has its own rules. Dry ice is regulated for transport, so carriers ask for the package to be labeled with the amount used, and some services won't accept it at all. Ask your practitioner which carrier they want and follow their packing instructions exactly. For anything you don't preserve, the usual burial and scattering rules in Florida apply.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Miami Beach.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Miami Beach may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do first if you might preserve your pet
- Freeze first, decide later. Once your pet is frozen and stays that way, taking a few weeks to choose does no harm.
- Blot, don't wash. Dab off any moisture with paper towel and keep the coat as dry as it is.
- Pose gently and bag tightly. A natural sleeping curl, then two heavy bags with the air pressed out to prevent freezer burn on the face and ears.
- Plan for a power cut. Know where you'd get dry ice or a backup freezer if the electricity went off for more than a day.
- Ask two or three practitioners if they accept an animal of your pet's kind and weight, what their current wait looks like, and how they prefer to receive pets.
- Ship or drop off frozen; if it's going by courier, send it at the start of the week and request a message as soon as it's in their hands.
Living with a preserved pet in Miami Beach
Many Miami Beach residents have family in other cities or countries, and grief may be shared at a distance. Sending photos in a family chat, or scheduling a call on the evening the urn arrives, lets others feel part of it. Free phone lines for grieving owners exist, and a licensed therapist is a sensible call if the loss keeps you from work or sleep for weeks.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Miami Beach?
By our estimate, about 30,000 households in Miami Beach have at least one dog or cat, and around 2,500 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 81,594, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Miami Beach?
Usually yes. Miami is about 4 miles away, North Miami is about 6 miles away and North Miami Beach is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Miami Beach actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Miami, about 4 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Miami Beach and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How does Miami Beach's weather affect pet aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Miami Beach, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
How long will I wait for a preserved pet?
Months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[9], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[10]. Add the practitioner's queue before your pet even goes into the chamber. Ask for an estimated return date in writing, and ask whether they send updates along the way.
What happens if something goes wrong during preservation?
Occasionally a practitioner finds damage once a pet thaws, often fur slipping because of a delay before freezing. A good one will call you, explain what they see and offer choices, such as switching to a partial piece or arranging cremation. Ask about this, and about refunds of the deposit, before you pay anything.
