Preserving your pet from Dubai: the first hours and beyond

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Getting your pet frozen and to a specialist from Dubai

A pet farewell in Dubai can be a quiet goodbye at home, a small gathering in a villa garden in the cooler evening, or a ceremony at the vet or crematorium. Friends from many cultures may want to join, each bringing their own traditions of grief and remembrance, and that's welcome. Tell us your community and what you'd like, and you'll get an email back with options.

Losing a pet far from your home country can feel especially lonely, particularly if the pet traveled with you and was part of your life in more than one place. Family abroad may not fully understand. Share memories with friends who knew your pet in Dubai, and look for pet loss support groups or online communities if the grief stays heavy.

Emergency hospitals in Dubai may handle several deaths in one night, and deceased pets are often moved to a shared cold room within the hour. When you ask for preservation, ask to see your pet's tag or label and check that it says freeze and hold. Take a photo of it on your phone. It's a small step, but it guards against a mix-up on a busy shift.

About 3,331,000 people live in Dubai, which makes it the largest of the 2 United Arab Emirates communities we cover.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Emirates Hills (13 miles), Sharjah (13 miles) and Abu Dhabi (76 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

A pet at home in Dubai

Cremation, burial and preservation in United Arab Emirates

Lacking a dependable cremation figure for United Arab Emirates, we can't tell you what's typical locally. The practical point is simpler. Ask whoever handles your pet after death, whether a vet, a pet funeral home or a municipal service, what they do by default. If it's cremation or collection, ask them to pause and freeze your pet while you contact a practitioner.

Heat, cold and a freezer that mustn't fail in Dubai

Whatever the weather in Dubai, a freezer is the only safe place to hold a pet for preservation. Fridges, cool rooms and outdoor spaces all let the body keep changing. If you don't have space at home, ask your vet, an emergency clinic or a friend with a chest freezer to hold your pet for a few days.

What pet preservation costs in Dubai

We haven't found reliable published pet preservation prices for the United Arab Emirates, so the table below shows UK and US price lists for scale. In the US, one price guide puts freeze-drying a cat or small dog at about $1,000–$2,500[4] and taxidermy at $800–$2,500[5]. Local prices will differ; ask any practitioner for a written quote in local currency.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in United Arab Emirates

Keeping a preserved pet you loved is legal almost everywhere, but selling or passing on some preserved species later can be restricted, especially birds and reptiles covered by wildlife-trade rules. Keep the practitioner's invoice, your pet's purchase or breeder records and any permits with the finished piece, so its origin is never in doubt. Remains you don't keep follow the United Arab Emirates guidance below.

In the UAE, pet preservation specialists are very rare, and exporting a pet's body for the work needs approval from the ministry responsible for animal health as well as the destination country. Extreme heat means your pet must be frozen within hours if you're considering it at all. Air-conditioned, dry rooms suit a preserved pet at home, but a glass case still helps with dust.

What to do now, and what can wait

  1. Find the nearest vet or emergency clinic to where you happen to be, and ask if they have a freezer your pet could go into today.
  2. Ask how long they could hold your pet, and whether a practitioner or courier could collect from them directly.
  3. If you have to drive home, pick up a rigid cooler and dry ice; if dry ice isn't available, use plenty of bagged ice. Seal your pet in two bags and put a towel between them and the ice.
  4. Check the ice every few hours during the drive, and don't leave the cooler behind in a car sitting in the sun.
  5. Keep the clinic's paperwork showing the date, your pet's weight and what they died of; the practitioner will ask to see it.
  6. Choose the practitioner once you're settled, and take their advice on whether your pet should travel from the clinic or from home.

Caring for the piece, and for the memories

Children who've moved countries with a pet often see it as a constant through big changes, so its loss can hit hard. Explain honestly in simple words and give them a role in the farewell, like choosing a photo or writing a note. If the family is relocating soon, involving children in how the ashes will travel can help too.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dubai?

Usually yes. Emirates Hills is about 13 miles away, Sharjah is about 13 miles away and Abu Dhabi is about 76 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

My pet has been in the fridge for a day. Can they still be preserved?

Sometimes. A pet kept cold the whole time may still be workable, while one left somewhere warm often isn't, because fur starts to slip. Move them to a freezer now and describe exactly what happened, including how long they were at room temperature, to a practitioner. A good one will tell you honestly whether it's still possible before taking a deposit.

What if my family doesn't want a preserved pet at home?

It's common for one person to love the idea while another finds it upsetting. Freezing your pet buys time to talk it over. Many families settle on a middle path: a preserved paw or a few feathers kept in one person's room, a paw cast, or cremation with a lock of fur. Decide together where any piece would be kept and who has to see it.

Can my vet in Dubai freeze my pet for me?

Many vets can hold a pet frozen for a few days, but you have to ask, because the usual routine is to send deceased pets for cremation. Tell the clinic as soon as possible that you're considering preservation, ask them to freeze rather than refrigerate, and ask them to note it on the paperwork. Check how long they can keep your pet and when you need to collect.

Is freeze-drying or taxidermy better for my pet?

Neither is better in general. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's actual body and suits sleeping or lying poses; it takes longer and is more sensitive to humidity. Taxidermy fits tanned skin over a sculpted form, allows sitting or alert poses and depends heavily on the artist's sculpting. Freeze-drying is the more common choice, at 62.3%[7] of the market by one industry estimate.

Is there a pet taxidermist in Dubai?

Possibly, but pet specialists are rare everywhere, so don't assume the closest taxidermist is the right one. Many mount game animals and see few pets. Most families choose a practitioner by the quality of their finished cats, dogs or birds, then ship their pet frozen overnight or drive it there. Tell us your pet's species and weight, and we'll email back practitioners who take pets from Dubai.
