Pet Preservation in the United Arab Emirates: what to know

Preserving a pet in the United Arab Emirates usually means waiting months. Freeze-drying and taxidermy often take 6–12 months[1], and a practitioner's queue adds more. Families who cope with the wait best tend to have chosen carefully, agreed everything in writing and found a small way to mark the months while their pet is away.

Prices for pet preservation in the United Arab Emirates depend more on the pet than on the place. Size, species, pose and method drive the quote, and delivery can add a meaningful amount where distances are long. Where we've found published prices, we show them; where we haven't, we say so and give overseas figures for scale.

We cover 4 communities in the United Arab Emirates, from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to smaller towns.

Cremation, burial and preservation in the United Arab Emirates

We haven't found a trustworthy cremation statistic for the United Arab Emirates, so we won't guess. Pet preservation is uncommon almost everywhere, which means you'll probably be explaining what you want to people who haven't been asked before. Keep it short: frozen, not refrigerated; held, not collected; and fur left as it is.

How much to budget for preservation

Whatever the local price, size and method drive it. Small pets cost least; large dogs cost the most and take the longest, often 6–12 months[1] or more. Add delivery, a base or display case and any painting, then compare written totals.

Currency swings and import duties can make an overseas quote misleading. If a practitioner abroad agrees to take your pet, ask for the total in both currencies, including couriers, veterinary certificates at each end and the return of the finished piece. Our memorial budget planner can help you decide on a limit first.

Permits, shipping and burial rules in the United Arab Emirates

One practical rule matters more than any statute: a pet who has had a post-mortem examination (a necropsy) usually can't be preserved whole, because of the incisions involved. If your vet, insurer or breeder asks for one, decide first which matters more to you, the answers or the body. Otherwise, domestic pets face few legal limits, and the notes below for the United Arab Emirates cover anything you don't keep.

In the UAE, pet preservation specialists are very rare, and exporting a pet's body for the work needs approval from the ministry responsible for animal health as well as the destination country. Extreme heat means your pet must be frozen within hours if you're considering it at all. Air-conditioned, dry rooms suit a preserved pet at home, but a glass case still helps with dust.

The first hours, step by step

  1. Raise preservation before the euthanasia appointment rather than after it, which gives the clinic time to work out where your pet will go afterward.
  2. Ask the vet to clip as little fur as possible for the injection or catheter, and to tell you which leg they'll use.
  3. Bring a towel and a sturdy cooler so your pet can go straight from the room to a freezer, yours or the clinic's.
  4. Take your time saying goodbye, and afterward, while your pet is still soft, arrange them into the sleeping or curled position you want.
  5. If you've already picked a practitioner, ask them beforehand how they want your pet bagged and shaped for freezing.
  6. Note the time of death and the time of freezing in your phone; those two times are the first things any practitioner asks.

Other ways to keep your pet close

Tell the people who knew your pet what you've chosen, in your own words. Most people are curious rather than critical. When your preserved pet comes home, give yourself time with them privately before anyone else visits. The first sight can be emotional, and it's easier without an audience.

Questions people ask

Does it matter which vet in the United Arab Emirates my pet is with when they die?

Mostly it matters whether they have freezer space and whether they'll take your pet off the crematory list. Any clinic can do that if you ask clearly. If yours can't freeze your pet, ask them to recommend a practice or emergency hospital nearby that can, or collect your pet quickly and use a freezer at home.

How long does pet preservation take for families in the United Arab Emirates?

Usually months. Freeze-drying takes three to six months for small pets and seven or more for large dogs[7], and both freeze-drying and taxidermy often run 6–12 months[1]. Add the practitioner's queue. Ask for a return date in writing and whether they'll send updates.

What should I do first if my pet dies in the United Arab Emirates and I might want them preserved?

Freeze them within hours. Lay your pet in a natural resting pose, don't wash them, double-bag them with the air pressed out and put them in the coldest freezer you have. If your pet is at a clinic, ask staff to freeze rather than refrigerate and to keep your pet out of the cremation collection. Everything else can wait.

Are preservation prices in the United Arab Emirates different from US price lists?

Often, yes. Each practitioner prices in local currency, and tax, delivery and the cost of a case all vary. We show local published prices where we've found them and US or UK figures for scale where we haven't. Ask every practitioner for a written total, including tax and return delivery, before comparing.

Can I ship my pet from the United Arab Emirates to a practitioner elsewhere?

Often, yes, within your own country. Practitioners usually ask for pets frozen solid, double-bagged and packed in a cooler with dry ice, sent overnight early in the week. Dry ice has labeling rules, so ask which carrier and service to use. Crossing an international border is harder and usually needs paperwork.

Should I choose freeze-drying or taxidermy if I live in the United Arab Emirates?

Where you live matters less than your pet and the pose you want. Freeze-drying keeps your pet's own body and suits resting poses; taxidermy fits the tanned skin onto a sculpted body and allows alert or sitting poses. In humid parts of the United Arab Emirates, a sealed case matters more for freeze-dried work. Ask a practitioner which method suits your pet, and why.
